Araucaria heterophylla
Family: Araucariaceae (araucaria family)
Common Names: Norfolk Island pine

The Norfolk Island pine is a forest giant that can reach heights of 200 ft (61 m) in its native habitat of Norfolk Island, south of New Caledonia and east of Australia in the southern Pacific Ocean. This island was discovered by Captain James Cook, claimed for Great Britain, and named for the Duchess of Norfolk. This tiny 3 by 5 mile long tropical paradise is famous not only for its namesake tree, but has a place in history, having been settled in 1856 by Pitcairners, descendants of Fletcher Christian and the other mutineers from the H.M.S. Bounty.

The Norfolk Pine is quite beautiful and the foliage has a soft texture. Growing very upright, the tree forms a very symmetrical pyramid, with branches emerging from the trunk in a regular and precise pattern. In NZ most specimens are around 50 -100 ft (15.2 - 30.5 m) tall. Many of these trees are seen towering high on our landscapes in NZ. We had one of these trees start growing in our garden once, but we soon moved it on.

It isnít actually a pine, this plant is a member of the Araucariaceae family. All of the species of Araucaria are native to the Southern Hemisphere. Today the Norfolk Island Pine's unique beauty is seen in tropical and sub-tropical landscapes all over the world.

The sky that day was one of the best we had over summer, so I didnít want to brighten it or saturate it at all. So all I did to the photo was to sharpen it in PS Elements 2 slightly, crop it and place the frame on it.

Very arty picture Janice! Sky looks exactly like 'blue Polish sky' ;-) Composition is superb. But shape is rather more suitable to Christmas not Easter ;-)) ?

Very nice shot Jancie!
It looks like a noel tree without decoration.

Hi, I am not surprised you move yours on not a tree I would like to own. I believe they have a wider native distribution then just Norfolk Island unfortunately I can not find my reference to this.

Nice composition and clear sky!!!!

Very interesting tree, most of the pines I've seen have the needles pointing downward. Nice POV and Symetrical look.
