Red-billed gull
Maori Name: Tarapunga

What's the red colour on the second gull's head? Can anyone guess? Answer below!!

Gulls can most often be seen at the beach, where they eat small marine creatures (hoppers, crabs and shellfish), but they also spend time at the dump – because they are good at scavenging food scraps that people throw away.

Grown up red-billed gulls have red beaks and red legs. Young red-billed gulls have a brown beak and legs.
Gulls live in flocks, so they have to get along with each other. It’s a bit like children at school. Gulls squabble (just like you do at school!) but they don’t really hurt each other, and they warn each other about danger.

The red colour on the second gull's head is Tomato Sauce or Ketchup!!! These scavengers eat whatever they can find - and here it looks like this one was trying to get chips covered in sauce out of some newspaper!! Pretty, eh?

Hi Janice,
WOW! Great shot!
Beautiful composition and nice contrast of colors!
Simply lovely!
Good job!

Hello Jancie
Very nice shot of these Red-billed gulls,
Perfect focusing,DOF and composition,
Superb shot.

Good Luck

I was thinking it might be blood... Seagulls look the same all over the world. Apparently they behave the same as well. :)

Hi Janice,
Excellent shot on this group of Red-billed Gulls. Soft shadowless light. and the colors look very good. Sharp detail with a pleasing falloff in the DOF. Yet it keeps enough detail in the far gull to still look good.

Hello Janice,
I remember these Gulls well from the beach in Manly where they carefully took care of all the leftovers around the snackbars. Even so, they're very beautiful Gulls with their bright red bills and legs. Great composition TFS and cheers, Ulla

A very fun picture, Janice, good for lifting up the spirits on a gray and cold day. : )
Super sharpness and exposure. The gulls facing in alternate directions make for a well-balanced composition.
And thanks for the interesting and comical notes.
Best wishes to you and your family for a Happy 2008!

Hello Janice,
great capture of a group of Red-billed Gulls, called Silver Gulls in Australia. Ecellent composition and superb sharpness of the three birds in the FG.
I like the explanation of the red markings on the face of the ketchup-addicted gull!
Nice one!
Thanks and best wishes for 2008 to you and you family (you in NZ are the first to see the new year in)

Hi Janice

I love Ketchup, but definitively not on a sea gulls head (chuckle).

With appreciation for this and for all the other wonderful postings you shared with us throughout the year and may there still be loads and loads of the same for the coming year.

As the New Year dawns…
may it open up more opportunities for you,
lead you unto the path of continued success,
happiness & good health.

Enjoy the work of God and live life to the full MF.

A wonderful 2008 for YOU and your loved ones.

Best regards
Kia Ora

Hi Janice,
delicate and nice image, very well composed and with nice and natural colours, the white is difficult to reproduce in pictures and you did it very well, brava
