Red-billed gull
Larus Novaehollandiae
Maori Name: Tarapunga

This is a native New Zealand Red-billed gull.
NOT an Australian one – but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Australian gulls fly over here some times. . .

Gulls can most often be seen at the beach, where they eat small marine creatures (sand-hoppers, crabs and shellfish), but they also spend time at the dump – because they are good at scavenging food scraps that people throw away.

They are small seagulls with grey back and white head and underparts. They are about 40cm long.

Grown up red-billed gulls have red beaks and red legs. Young red-billed gulls have a brown beak and legs. I think this one is an older teenager – it hasn’t quite got the full red bill.

Gulls live in flocks, so they have to get along with each other. They squabble all the time but they don’t really hurt each other, and they warn each other about danger.

Hello Janice!

I'm eating right now :-) White beauty with perfect BG and details. Good moment with bread in beak. I'm very sleepy after this night so sorry - no funny critique today!

Hi Janice

Nice portrait! You have managed to expose the white very well (its often prone to underexposure). Nice catchlight!

hello Janice,

Fabulous close-up!
The details of the gull's head, the texture of its plummage and the subtle interplay of light and shadows is excellent!
The expression speaks loudly of 'Can I manage this at one go!'

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Absolutely marvellous! Great stuff! A impressive portrait with great details and clarity. Excellent technical skills applied. Wonderful camera work. I don't like it, I love it and it is going straight to where it belong - My favourite box. Thanks for sharing this beauty.
Warmest regards.

Hi Janice!

We all wish him a good appetite! This gull is really cute, and you present him in a crystal clear picture, rich with details. The colour and lighting management is superb, too. It would be interesting to know why you have chosen a very short shutter speed.

Kind regards

Markus

Hola Janice.
Gulls are not popular bird here where I live in the middle of the desert region, but I meet them every time I have a chance to go to the see, I think they are very smart, and beautiful also. Great image of one of them. very very sharp and excellent detail with the piece bread en beak.
Saludos My friend.

Hi Janice,

A wonderful close-up of this gull with his beak stuffed with bread. I love his eye!!! Wonderful shadings of his head and plummage. Superb details and background.

Jane

Well, Janice, just as I was enjoying Mario's shot, I've come across this one that is arguably as potent -- perhaps even more so -- in a different way. I really like the size of this image, the close-up presentation that lets us see the texture of the moutfhul, the details of the feathers, and that wide-eyed alertness of the bird itself. Great DOF control, too -- a very pleasing blurring of the background to keep the portrait center stage.

Regards,
Jim

This is a nice sharp image Janice. I like the simple white and red colors of this gull. The softly textured gray background tones nicely with the subject.
