Coprinus plicatilis.

With thanks to Clive Shirley / Fungiman who kindly identified this fungi for me. I can recommend his website Hidden Forest. He has some wonderful photos there and it is very interesting to visit.

Clive says this fungi looks to be Coprinus plicatilis. I sent him the photos and he thought the habitat was a little strange as it was covered in leaves from the deciduous trees. Normally the fungi is found growing in grass and he was right the fallen leaves were covering the grass in the park where I found them.

Species: Coprinus plicatilis
A delicate species that last less then a day. Found singly or in small groups after rain.
Common Name: None
Found: Grass areas
Substrate: Ground
Spores: Black
Height: 75 mm
Width: 20 mm
Season: Autumn.
Edible: Unknown

Coprinus plicatilis is also known as the Fairy Parasol, or the Japanese Umbrella.

Thanks Clive. See Hidden Forest.

Hi Janice,

The autumn colours of the leaves make a lovely display area for these umbrellas. This is something that one would probably just walk past or step on but not think of taking a photo. Well seen and well photographed.

Hello Janice,
A fine image of some fungi growing among the fallen leaves of the American Red Oak. The direct from above POV gives it the somewhat abstract pattern feeling which makes it fascinating.
TFS this delight,
Ivan

How interesting, Janice! Very nice captures of the "umbrellas" and especially interesting blending of the colors with these nestled among the red, green, and brown oak leaves. It looks as though the day may have been somewhat cold, wet, or both. In any case, nicely seen and shown.
Jim

The little umbrellas are well assimilated in this beautiful collage of colours formed by fallen leaves, Janice.
I admire your sense of aesthetics in choosing the details for this frame.
It is enchanting!

Hello Janice,
I like the pretty little 'umbrellas' but what I really fall for here are the colours and patterns of the American Oak leaves, it is a very beautiful sharp capture! Interesting note too about the fungi!
Many thanks, Ulla

This is one of the most colourful shots I have seen in a while. The mix of colours and patterns...along with the clarity and sharpness...oh yes and good contrast...all of this make it a very eye pleasing image. I saw this earlier today...and I bookmarked it so I would not forget to come back when my time was more clear...
