Katydid / Kiki Pounamu (Maori)
Caedicia simplex
Family: Tettigonidae

Katydids belong to the family of Long Horned Grasshoppers, and are thought to be native to New Zealand, although they are also found in Australia and America, where they are sometimes known as 'Bush Cricket'.
They are commonly found on garden shrubs, and in the evening can be heard making a short, high pitched 'zip' sound,a bit like the sound of scissors snipping.
They can jump and fly,and by night, feed on fresh leaves, flower buds and fruit, which sometimes changes their colour from a bright green to a pinkish hue.

This is a young specimen, but as they grow, large wings develop which cover the whole length of the body, camouflaging the insect with the appearance of a leaf, complete with leaf veins.

Hopefully I'll be able to find a few fully grown ones in a few weeks time, and post a photo of one of those.

Hope you like this one.
Thanks for looking.

Steve Reekie, HI. I wonder if when this juv grows up, it will make loud noise at night. The macro shot is stunning with pleasing green hues. Tact sharp focus and very well silenced background. I like the framing of this hopper perched well on that diagonal stem. Best regards. Jusni

great macro. love the way all of the katydids details are so clear.

Hi Steve,
An impressive macro shot of this camouflaged long-horned grashoper in a fine compo with great clarity. Colours also great.
TFS and cheers,

Hi Steve,
Good to hear from you again via a critique of one of my images.
This is impressive. Tough subject to capture. Brilliant greens. My suggestions to make this even better might be to shave off a bit of the top of the image, and to make the background even more blurred.
All the best,
