|In a part of the rainforest in south New Zealand, hidden under a fern I saw this strange plant/fungus. Actually, I have no idea what it is. About 8-10 cm high, it did not show any relationship to the plants around it and the color said "I'm dangerous".|
Would be nice if someone could tell me what this thing is.

Hi Lar, your strange plant is in fact a fungi known as Aseroe rubra. this belongs to a group of fungi known as stinkhorns oddly your is missing the dark spore mass from around the centre. Maybe the insects have consumed it all :)
your photo shows AseroŽ rubra, a fantastic specie created by Jaques Julien Houtton de la BillandiŤre in 1800 and published on "Bull. Murith. Soc. Valais. Sci. Nat." (num. 1: pg. 145).
Unfortunately it doesn't grow in Italy (where I live); here grows Clathrus ruber Micheli 1729 which is close to AseroŽ rubra from systematic point of view .
