In a part of the rainforest in south New Zealand, hidden under a fern I saw this strange plant/fungus. Actually, I have no idea what it is. About 8-10 cm high, it did not show any relationship to the plants around it and the color said "I'm dangerous".
Would be nice if someone could tell me what this thing is.

Hi Lar, your strange plant is in fact a fungi known as Aseroe rubra. this belongs to a group of fungi known as stinkhorns oddly your is missing the dark spore mass from around the centre. Maybe the insects have consumed it all :)

Hi Lars,
your photo shows AseroŽ rubra, a fantastic specie created by Jaques Julien Houtton de la BillandiŤre in 1800 and published on "Bull. Murith. Soc. Valais. Sci. Nat." (num. 1: pg. 145).
Unfortunately it doesn't grow in Italy (where I live); here grows Clathrus ruber Micheli 1729 which is close to AseroŽ rubra from systematic point of view .
By, Marco.

I found some interesting info on this interesting fungi.

Family: Phallaceae

Aseroe rubra
