This is another shot taken from Mount George, looking down towards the Motukiekie Rocks near 10 Mile.

At first glance this might just look like a landscape shot, but if you look at the rock ledge in the foreground you can see a rounded lump of coal and a piece of smoky quartz, naturally exposed by weathering.
This area of the West Coast is very rich in mineral deposits, and coal and gold have been mined here extensively since the early 1900s.
It is not at all unusual to find coal seams exposed to the surface around here,in fact, the Croesus Track which we followed over the mountains a couple of weeks ago, starts out as a path cut into solid coal!
Pure white quartz, rose quartz and smoky quartz are also abundant in our rivers and on our beaches, often permeated by shiny flakes of mica, which give the riverbeds and beaches a sparkling glitter look.
This place really is a geologists paradise!

Thanks for looking!
Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve,

A good depth shot. Like 3D. I like the rough seas around the rocks very well. And the difference between the deep and shallow sea is also very good show in colors. Great compo. Your POV, DOF are good. The coal is also very clear and sharp. The notes are very interesting. Can you also use these type of coal for the (old type) stove?

Great shot. Thanks for sharing. Greetings and TFS BOB

Very cool shot Steve, alot of interesting elements to it, particularly to a amateur geology enthusiast...save you getting cold in the evening of you're camping out too, eh? ;o)
Very well chosen POV giving a huge feeling of height looking down onto what looks like an impressive looking coatline. Great shot, deserves more attention.
Paul
