(Sphenodon punctatus punctatus)

What type of animal?

Where does it live? New Zealand

What's it covered with? Scales

Natural habitat? Forest

What does it eat? Meat

The tuatara is a carnivore, it eats small birds and insects such as wetas and moths. Tuataras have been on earth for a very long time, in fact when dinosaurs were around so were tuataras. It is a reptile, but has an unusually low body temperature optimum and will often choose a damp dark hollow rather than be out in the full heat of the day..

.They are very endangered as they are not adapted to protect themselves against introduced predators to New Zealand which steal their eggs and eat their young. They have also suffered through habitat destruction..

.Auckland Zoo has a number of different types, or subspecies, of tuatara that come from different offshore islands. These include Stanley Island tuataras, Curvier tuataras and Stephen's Island tuataras. We are successfully breeding young, some of which are being returned to predator-free offshore islands in reintroduction programmes.

Sorry everyone, have been very busy at work lately, didn't manage to catch up with all of your photos, I hope my peak time at work will over soon, then I can have sometime at night to view all the photos instead of writing reports.

Great post!

I've not seen one of these before in teh flesh - I MUST get to the zoo one day.
Good colours and details Sweety, he is a tad soft, but I think it would always be hard to get him sharp all over with that lumpy skin! Your POV is great, he's posing so well for you. Good job! Well done.

Yep you look knackered! Hi Sweety, good shot. Is this a Tuatara? It looks different to all the pictures I have seen in the past...although I haven't seen that many pictures! The composition is nice and you've got a pretty good focus. There appears to be some banding on the BG in the lower left. A little more DOF would have been nice but I can see you were struggling with the light.

To me, you don't.

Nice post, Sweety. Great pov and composition; excellent bg.

I would try to add some more sharpness, but that's just an opinion.

Beautiful and interesting portrait for this superb Tuatara ! Composition, colors, details and sharpness are very good ! Thanks for sharing Sweety.

Sweety, this is a excellent Picture. i can Great colours, sharpness excellent, a very nice composite. Well done.

best regards

Its an interesting critter, Sweety. I am glad you managed to post in the rush time.

Given your distance from the subject you might consider using a bit more DOF. You used ISO400 and still did not have enough light to get an acceptable DOF. You might try using the flash to get that extra light in there but have to diffuse it or bounce it at this distance.

Nice image Sweety. Its well seen and composed. Too bad it had to be taken through the glass as it has caused a lack of sharpness. Your choice of depth of field is critical and I agree with gerhard's comments. Kind regards, Rob
