Ring-tailed Lemur
(Lemur catta)

What type of animal?

Where does it live? Africa

What's it covered with? Fur

Natural habitat? Forest

What does it eat? Plants

Lemurs are prosimians, a primitive form of primate. We call monkeys and apes (including humans) 'simians', or higher primates. Ring-tailed lemurs are one of around 30 lemur species left in the wild..

Lemurs are only found on the island of Madagascar, off the east coast of Africa. Because over 85% of the island's ancient rainforests have already been destroyed, ring-tailed lemurs are vulnerable in the wild and other lemur species are endangered..

Front teeth are specially designed to be used as a grooming aid. Males rub their scent glands along their tails and waft them at each other over access to the females..

Striped tails are used for balance to help carry their special smell and to make sure they donít lose sight of each other on the forest floor, as ring-tailed lemurs spend more time walking along the ground than other lemur species..

Females are dominant; males have to wait while the ladies drink and eat first and it's the females who get to choose their partners..

We have a tight-knit group in the Just Juice Primate Trail, at Auckland Zoo. Don lives with Sheba and Shona (who are mother and daughter). They have been here since 1997 and have produced an ever-growing family... their children are Sofia, Soalata, Berge, Seranana and Samba.

What a pose, Sweety! It shows a lot of personality. The composition with the soft bg is very pleasing and allows the star to take center stage. Wonderfully done :-) Thanks for sharing this humorous moment with us!

Hi Sweety, I have no time to write a decent comment. I give to you the well deserved smiley.

Day thought:
I have something in my heart which tickles my soul. (Luc)

Thank you for sharing pictures and notes and for the enjoyment which they give to me.

Hi Sweety, The Compo and POV is very nice. I think it is oversharpened and overexposed though. The fun factor makes this very pleasing.

Hi Sweety,
I haven't known that you are also a member here ... I like this shot soooo much, they are so cute while making a sunbath.
Thanks and greetings
