Black Swan
SWAN (Cygnus atratus)

The black swan is an Australian bird that flew into New Zealand in the 1860s at the same time as acclimatisers were releasing it, resulting in an explosion of numbers. However, from the 1970s on farm silt run-off killed the water plants that swan depend on. Starving birds began to eat grass, leading to culls in which many thousands of the birds were killed until their numbers adapted to their impoverished circumstances. In other areas, where water plants persist, swan numbers remain strong so most regions can still allow limited swan hunting opportunities.

The issue of lake pollution, and therefore the swans future, is one in which Fish & Game NZ takes a special interest.

I realize it looks like quite a bit of noise on the water, but I have put it through the Noiseware Filter and this lot has remained.

Hi Janice!

Good composition of this shot. I like pose of this black beauty. Big red beak looks nice with all these black feathers. Water made good BG, noise isn't disturbing. TFS!

HI Janice,

Nice work.
I like the DOF it make me feel like he is about to climb out of my screen.
NIce work
:)

Nice portrait Janice.I've seen these, but never really noticed the white band across the beak before.Very interesting.

Hi Janice, your photo certainly is a beauty! The sharpness and depth of color is excellent. The DOF is just right too. I did a WS by running your photo through Neat Image so you could see what it would do for the noise. Check it out and let me know what you think. TFS! Regards, Kris

Hi Janice,
Hey look who is coming our of my screen!
DOF is so perfect! Very good shot...
Thanks for sharing this black beauty:)

Hi Janice

I was going to post a close up of a black swan tonight. I took it last week when Mark and I did a day trip to Taupo. When I saw yours I decided not to post is. Will do mine tomorrow night. POV is good. Looks like a lot of noise in the BG and the swan has been a bit distorted with the PP. I think too much Noiseware. You would have been better off to select the background with magnetic lasso tool, and run a blur tool to hide the noise. The swan would have retained some better clarity. Just my opinion. TFS.

What a sweet "face" :-)
Amazing shot and nice to know your friendly swan.

PS. Thank you for e-mail. I'll try to write you as soon as possible :-)

its a beauty Jancie,
And I like the way you took the shot, very nice composition, with a fantastic pov a great details and a wonderful dof, very good job,
gr. Jaap

Hi Janice, this is realy a black beauty with good sharpness, I can see the waterdrops on the feathers. The colour of the beak is pretty with the white stripe. The background is a little noisy, I tried to reduce this in a workshop and would be pleased, if you take a look. Thanks for this shot, have a nice day

Nice portrait shot Janice, great sharpness and DOF, well captured too. Thanks for sharing.

Janice, the picture is very nice.

Excellent pov, composition and vivid colors.

As for the noise, I present you just another alternative; after all, the guys above have already done great jobs.

Hi Janice
it is the bright red beak contrasting with the dark background that this photo is all about
thanks for showing us
cheers .... sarju

wonderful portrait, janice! :-)
as you say yourself it looks a bit noisy
but that does not matter,
the red eyes and beak are so clear,
i really like that!
once in a while we, too, see a black swan here in germany, but only when it has escaped from the zoo.
great shot, thor.

Hi Janice,
I love to see birds on TN, and this is really a very good shot, well composed and showing the most significative part of this swan. Good POV on the half side and nice to see just a part of the blurred feathers in the back. Yes, there is noise, but efficiently solved in the WS.
