Whale Bay

The Tutukaka Coast
, Northland, just north of Whangarei on the east coast, has some of the most picturesque coastal scenery in the country - Matapouri, Woolleys Bay and Sandy Bay are popular beach and surf playgrounds. There are many walking tracks to such super little beaches as Whale Bay, which you can see in the distance. There are dozens of interesting nooks, crannies and lookout points among outstanding pohutukawa trees.

The photo is taken from Woolleys Bay, only 10 minutes south from my last posting, Sandy Bay. Many years ago we spent a day on Whale Bay. All the family can remember our special time there. We swam all day, had a picnic lunch, played lots of games and made sandcastles.

Whale Bay is about 40 km north-east of Whangarei and only 1/2 km (by road) beyond Matapouri (Iíll be showing you Matapouri soon). Whale Bay is exquisite, accessible only by a short walking track through native bush reserve, used by early Maori tribes during their whaling expeditions because of the calm waters. This bay and the bush walk is one of the most beautiful examples of coastal scenery.

Whale Bay, for example, is one of the best in Tutukaka but rarely has more than 10 people on it. It is also west facing so sunsets can be spectacular.
