White Peahen / Peafowl / Peacock
Pavo cristatus
Family: Phasianidae

Some wanted to see the whole image of the white peacock “in action”, so here he is, The background isn’t too good but it was the best I could do. He performed for 4 minutes and his missus slept under a tree for the whole time.

During breeding season, the peacock often "struts" for the peahen, wanting her to notice his lovely train. He usually always turns to face the peahen, but she is not always attentive.

The peacock's long train of beautiful feathers is often called the tail by some people, but these longer feathers are actually the upper tail coverts. The true tail feathers are seen from behind when the peacock struts; they help to hold the train erect. As the lovely White peacock is displaying, a whirring, rustling noise is made by the movement of these feathers. This long, beautiful train is moulted each year in late summer.

The peacock begins his raucus call early in the Spring, and the call continues throughout breeding season. Often, there is a "telltale" slight crook in the upper neck of the peacock, indicating that breeding season is nearing.

He calls frequently during breeding season and also responds to sounds such as dogs barking, doors slamming, etc.

The White peafowl are not true albinos, but colour variations of the India Blue peafowl. The White lack coloration in all parts of the body except the eye, which is blue.

The peacock will have his full plumage (including the long train) his third year.

They like to flash, don't they? Nicely captured with the white against the dark background.

Hello Janice,
the bird looks a bit artifical but in combination with the deep red and green from the bottle brush in the BG I find it an interessting compo. Good note as expected.
TFS. Thomas

Hello Janice!
Magnificent capture.POV,details, framing,DOF and composition are perfect.TFS....:-)

Hi Janice!

I prefer this one to the other one since we can see the hole bird. Focus is sharp and exposure is good. However I find the white fence very distrubing in the BG. I did a WS to remove it. I hope you like it.
Great work and TFS.

Hi

I've never seen one of these before (a white one I mean). Lovely clarity and sharpness. The contrast between the white peacock and dark background is stunning.

Great shot of this show-off!

Hello Janice!
Good picture. Nice composition.
We had some snow today and your White Peahen would have disappeared in it: white on white.
Have a great week my distant friend.

You did well to get his all in the frame. The exposure is spot on. Well done, Janice.

Hi Janice,
Excellent shot! The peacock is so beautiful. His feathers look so elegant. I like the composition and the colours in the background, which contrast well with the white of the peacock. Nice work!
