Double Beauty

This Double Rainbow appeared as we were having dinner in a café in Mangonui in Doubtless Bay in the upper North Island of New Zealand last week. Mangonui means 'big shark' in Maori.

We had had a very wet day, and also a puncture in the middle of the heaviest downpour!! The rain had just stopped as we were eating and this beauty appeared at 7.51pm, so I had to go see it. The colours of the sky also kept changing as I was taking photos of it (for about 10 minutes).

And the next day was sunny and hot, just perfect for our holidays.

What makes the colours in the rainbow?

The traditional description of the rainbow is that it is made up of seven colours –
red,
orange,
yellow,
green,
blue,
indigo,
and violet.

Actually, the rainbow is a whole range of colours from red to violet and even beyond the colours that the eye can see.

A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a nearly continuous spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere. It takes the form of a multicoloured arc, with red on the outside and violet on the inside.

A double rainbow includes a second, fainter, arc with colours in the opposite order, that is, with violet on the outside and red on the inside.

Great picture. I also have a picture of a double rainbow that I'm going to post soon. However, it's only after reading your note that I went back to my picture and saw that the second rainbow has its colors reversed!

Thanks

Hi Janice

Double SPLENDOR! What a magnificent catch!
It's rare (at least here) to spot such a big rainbow with nothing in the FG to disturb the picture, but two....now's way to much :p
Indeed you've managed to contain a wonderful moment in your photo.
The composition is superb, the colors are magnificent and the exposure is spot-on.
GREAT work!

Bravo, TFS and Happy Holidays!

Hi Janice,

I love this landscape. Great colours. I like the note too. Very well done.

Jan-Hendrik

Hello Janice,
a most beautiful double rainbow that you have perfectly captured and composed with very clear colours even on the fainter outer rainbow.
Double beauty, indeed: the rainbows, and your shot.
Thank you, and have a nice holiday!
All the best for the New Year!
Kind regards,
Peter

Hi Janice
The beauty isnt double as you say but more than one million.
Excellent at all points
Lucky you being there.
TFS and see you

What a nice capture Janice. I always seem to have a power or telephone pole in a shot of a rainbow. I wonder what was to the left of your photo. Might have been fun to stitch together a complete rainbow...but I suspect there was something blocking the view. It is a nice shot...worth interrupting dinner for.

Wow Janice!
What an amazing shot! I have seen something like this a couple of time but I couldn’t set the proper exposure and it was still raining and I had rain spots on my lens :) This is beautiful, almost magic! I love the way the land is lightened. Those colors are really great. There is something almost mystical about rainbows. I love it! Thanks,
Claudine

Beautiful shot Janice, I like it.
I've never found a rainbow with camera ready, let alone a deuce!
Somewhere, over the rainbow... :)
Best wishes for a Happy New Year mf.

bonjour janice

bravo.
laurent

Hi Janice,
I've missed this beauty, but I am glad I found it. This is a very beautiful photo with a great capture of the double rainbow. Did you know that a double rainbow is more common that people expect? The colors are perfectly captured. A great composition with the rainbow ending in the top corner.
TFS,
Niek
