Broad Squid, Southern Reef Squid, Southern Calamari Squid
Sepioteuthis australis
Maori Name: Ngu Wheke (Noo Feckee)

Sepioteuthis australis is a temperate water species that can be found around the southern coastline of Australia and in the northern waters of New Zealand.

This is a very popular species with fishers and belongs to the squid family Loliginidae. It can be found around inshore coastal waters and frequently forms small schools of up to a dozen individuals and they can be found over seagrass meadows and reefs.

They are generally seen by divers at night time as this is when they are more active and are attracted to divers diving lights.

They feed on fish and crustacean species and are a fast voracious feeder.

When disturbed the Squid will squirt out jet-black ink in defence to confuse its predator.

It lays its eggs on the seafloor or attached to sponges in fleshy white strings of 2-6 eggs per string.

The Broad Squid, Southern Reef Squid, Southern Calamari Squid can grow quite large and can have a mantle length of up to 50cm.

This Squid was at our local aquarium - Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World and Antarctic Encounter, in Auckland.

Here is another picture that I took of it, or one of its mates!! – They all look alike!

Hi Janice!

Great catch! I know how hard is to take good picture in aquarium ;-) and you did it very well! Fascinating animal - I saw it only on TV. Great, dark mood, with animal floating on black BG. Really big eyes. I like it very much, my friend!

Hi Janice,
Wonderful shot. Superb colours and sharpness considering that it is an aquarium shot. Very difficult but superbly done. Nicely composed too. Kudos.
TFS.

Hi Janice,
An excellent shot on this Squid. A difficult shot and you managed it very well. Dice sharp detail. The lighting was excellent to get the squid so well, yet allow the dark backround. Very nice!
Scott

Hi Janice,
Fantastic underwater picture; considering thick glass, low light, and fast moving object. Congratulations.

What a beautiful and clear picture of this squid, Janice!
Any sign of Nemo or the Nautilus? :))
I really love the way you captured the wavey motion of the side membrane of the squid.
Also the eye-contact is excellent! Did you know squids are octopuses have one of the best vision from te entire invertebrate world. It's also said by some scientist that they have color vision...pretty evolved, wouldn't you say? :)
Anyway, considering the condition, the photo is also very sharp and very well exposed.
Great work!

Bravo, TFS and Happy 2007!

Janice, this is an unusual and great picture. I've never seen one of them.

Great presentation: excellent lighting and bg. I do enjoy sharpness too.

By the way: the president of my country is known as "Lula"; in English, Squid.

Hello Janice,
I recognize this little creature :-) What a strange specie, this is very interesting. The clarity, details, compo and POV are very good here. Thanks for sharing this very special animal.

Hello Janice,
What a superb photo for this strange "calamar". It is smart with the dark background.
The "+++" : subject, composition, point of view, sharpness through the glass, DOF, background, exposure, instructive note...
The "-" : nothing...
Congratulations dear friend and TFS.
