Emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) are very common in Australia. The "novaehollandiae" refers to the early Dutch name for Australia New Holland. This one was in Mungo National Park in outback NSW. They are the world's second tallest bird after ostriches. They can reach 50km per hr when running. They mainly eat vegetation but will also eat insects.
You can rarely get up close to an emu in the wild so I took this photo using a hand held large 150-500mm lens. |

Hello Ian,
Big bird! Not easy to get good POV and composition. Well captured with stunning details. Here I would prefer to provide more space in foreground. When Bird's legs are hiding in the grass, IMHO, it looks better if I give more space in the foreground. Otherwise it looks like something missing.
