Soaring is the name given to that portion of flight in which the animal uses the minimum amount of energy to maintain flight. This is the portion of a birds flight that most closely resembles a model rocket glider in flight. During this period, energy is extrated from the natural winds and converted to potential (height gain) or kinetic (speed gain) energy. Soaring birds usually glide using horizontal and vertical air movements, and exert muscular energy only to correct position and to hold their wings down in the horizontal position.

Soaring that depends on vertical movements of the atmosphere has been termed as static soaring, as opposed to dynamic soaring where energy is extracted from variations in horizontal wind speed. A rocket modeler may be able to exploit these methods, particularly if it is the radio control variety, but regular gliders may be also use some of these same techniques too.

The Rock Shag or Magellanic cormorant is a marine cormorant found around the southernmost coasts of South America. Its breeding range is from around Valdivia, Chile, south to Cape Horn and Tierra del Fuego, and north to Punta Tombo in Argentina. In winter it is seen further north, with individuals reaching as far as Santiago, Chile on the west coast and Uruguay on the east. The birds also breed around the coasts of the Falkland Islands

This picture was taken off the coast of Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city. It is located on the southern coast of the island of Tierra del Fuego, in a setting surrounded by mountains and overlooking the Beagle Channel.

Bonjour,
Belle ambiance. L'aspect plutôt monochrome du cliché me plait bien. Les différents plans donnent un bon relief.
Bonne journée.

Hello , this is a magical scene , super photograph , TFS.

Hi Sky,

This is where my next big excursion will lead me to, maybe next year... You are really lucky to have seen this. Are you going on a cruise to Antarctica, while you're there?

Nice view of beautiful mountain shapes.

Thanks for the note as well.

Cheers,
Christian

Hi Sky,
What a very special shot of these cormorants the whole scenery is very special.
Compliments

What amazing mountains they have there. You say it was off the coast. Were you in a boat? You lost some details in the light and dark value areas but that would be difficult to avoid with such a high contrast scene. I love the birds and the angled rock they are on.

Hello Sky,
Your notes are very, very interesting and this picture is too :) I like this almost silver lightning, POV, composition and subjects. This exposure makes this picture looks almost unreal. This is beautiful! TFS,
Claudine

Hi Sky,
An impressive scene. The layers and depth look great. The foreground layer with all the birds and rock, and the distant layer of beautiful mountains. Looks like a great place to get good updrafts for them.

Hi Sky,
An exotic place to visit. Beautiful composition. The mountains in the background are marvelous.

Hi Sky

This is in my opinion one of the best photos you've posted here!
What a magnificent photo, full of impact and details everywhere!
The focus and DOF here is outstanding, keeping excellent sharpness on all the shags as well as that impressive mountains behind them, and that is what sets it apart from all the others...what a breathtaking scene and composition!
The contrast and exposure are also terrific here and i think you did a great job there, especially if i take in consideration the harsh light and the angle it was coming from.
All-in-all: a brilliant shot!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Sky,

Very nice composition of those birds... Not easy to manage the exposition with all those black/white/grey colors! Maybe the foreground is a little bit underexposed (but I must confess that I'm looking from my portable which is not very good on display...). I'm wandering how this picture will be in black and white?

TFS,

Michel

So beautiful ! All these birds in the fore ground, ad those wonderful mountains in the BG ! It's a very powerful picture with a lot of visual impact. I like all the different nuances of grey, it's almost a black and white picture, it's perfect. Straight to my favourites. Very well done !
valerie.

great pic, TFS Ori

Hola Sky,
Majestuosa e imponente vista de nuestro sur argentino. Me gusta la perspectiva, la concentración de aves y los imponentes Andes nevados al fondo, dando toda la imagen una sensación de frio.
Saludos

Hallo Sky,
monumentale, sehr stimmungsvolle Aufnahme dieser bewegten Vogelschar in elementarer, sturmgepeitschter Landschaft. Wildnis pur.
Die fast auf reine Grauwerte reduzierte Farbigkeit gefällt mir sehr. Würde hier den Versuch wagen, das Bild konsequent zur Gänze auf Schwarzweiss (Grauwerte) zu konvertieren. Komposition sehr gelungen.
Mit Dank und besten Grüßen,
Peter
