Euptoieta hortensia (Blanchard, 1852) Variegated Fritillary

I couldn’t find the information about this species that is why I prepared a note about the Nymphalidae.

The butterfly family Nymphalidae contains about 6000 species that have been placed into about 550 genera. Currently these genera are placed into 12 subfamilies and 40 tribes. Many species are brightly coloured and they include popular species such as the emperor, admirals, tortoiseshells and fritillaries. However, the underwings are dull and in some species look remarkably like dead leaves, or are much paler, producing a cryptic effect that helps the butterfly disappear into its surroundings. In adult butterflies, the first pair of legs are small or reduced, giving the family the other names of four-footed or brush-footed butterflies. The caterpillars are hairy or spiky with projections on the head, and the chrysalids have shiny spots.

Nymphalidae subfamiles:

Libytheinae
Danainae
Calinaginae
Charaxinae
Satyrinae
Heliconiinae
Limenitidinae
Pseudergolinae
Apaturinae
Biblidinae
Cyrestinae
Nymphalinae

Hello Krzysztof,
Very sharp capture of this beautiful butterfly seldom seen. I like the intricate wing pattern and the gentle colours. The grassy background makes it stand out.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hello Krzysztof,
Superb capture of a nymphalid species of butterfly that can't be photographed that often and is most certainly a first on TN!
That you have produced a sharp, detailed, well coloured and composed shot makes it evn better.
Nice to see this and thanks for sharing,
Ivan

Hej,
Bardzo ciekawy motyl. Wcale nie wyglada na krewniaka Heliconii. Moze bardziej podciagnalbym poziomy ale poza tym piekne zdjecie dokumentalistyczne.
Serdecznosci,
Michal
