Dasypus hybridus

It is a species that surely is in declivity in our zone by the advance of the agricultural activities, that eliminate the grass where it lives. Today there is a tendency to eliminate or to cultivate margins of fields and ways, authentic salvation of many species.

Some data of the species:
- Feeds mainly on ants and thermites, but it even includes crickets and small vertebrates
- It lives in caves of up to two meters in length that it excavates with its claws
- A particularitity of the sort is that each litter is of the same sort by division of the fertilized ovum (are born between 7 and 9 young)
- Size: body up to 30 cm; tail up to 15 cm; weight up to 2 kg.
- Potentially vulnerable species by the destruction of the habitat. Hunted for consumption, its meat more is appreciated than the one of the hairy armadillo, but in small scale, it would not affect too much this practice to the conservation of the species.
- Is used it in medical researches because it has the ability to contract leprosy.

Bonjour Hernan,
Adorable créature que tu nous montres ici. On la voit rarement sur TN. Le tatou était-il endormi ou seulement effrayé? Très beau document, bien cadré . Impressionnantes griffes, indispensables pour creuser.
Un grand merci aussi pour avoir pris une photo dans la nature
