By their diurnal and spacious layout is undoubtedly the most famous owl. Common inhabitant of our pampas, its range covers open areas throughout America, besides being the only owl; with burrowing habits. Its specific name "cunicularia" refers to this custom.

It measures about 28 cm., Heavily built, long feathered legs and huge front eyes with light-sensitive cells that give acute vision both day and night.

It is easy to see that a threat or danger to their pupils dilate, as the saying goes
"open your eyes", even his white eyebrows volume to increase arousal.

The female is slightly smaller than the male which facilitates entry and exit of the cave and mostly stay in the nest.

In high sedimentary areas, builds its burrow using mainly their legs, while the short peak weeds and roots. Both male and female work in excavation. Sometimes the item back and get out of land fill companion monitors input. You can also occupy “vizcachas’s caves”; “peludos” (a kind of armadillo) or other burrowing mammals. Occasionally you can place it in ravines, road cuts, termite mounds, etc..

The tunnel is just over a meter long, with a platform at the entrance. The mouth is about 18 cm. in diameter. Manure usually incorporates both the incubation chamber (heating) and the mouth of the cave.

The incubation chamber is a simple widening of the tunnel. Place 4 to 6 white, ovoid eggs.

The nesting season runs from October to December. During heat are seen very solicitous, rubbing their beaks or cuddling each other. The chicks hatch in 28 days. Because the female begins immediately started incubating posture difference chicks born with one or two days of each other.

The female feeds and cares diligently, while the male brings food banking in
cave entrance at the foot of the female or give it directly to the peak.

Parents, sometimes accompanied by other adults continuously monitor the chicks. In the
presence of a potential predator, emit a loud cry of alarm and quickly to enter all
the cave.

After two weeks the chicks begin to appear to cave. His eyes seem "hidden". They are like pompoms cream with brownish gray back who can barely walk.
Sometimes they lie reel and the lack of balance. All are surprised and all fear him.
If the notes with dedication could be discovered in her features almost expressions of wonder at the new world.

Gradually they increase their hours outside and practice to strengthen your muscles fluttering. They feel proud when they achieve a "fly" 50 cm. and watch their brothers who observe him as saying "did you see what I did?".

Just over a month later, taking the first flight and 45/50 days, the female expels the chicks to begin his life independently. Within a year of life and can be played.

They feed on small mammals (tuco-tuco, mice, bats, etc..), Reptiles, amphibians, birds and insects. Like all estrigiformes, it is very useful to man combat pests that you damage crops and / or transmit diseases.

The hunt live prey and then swallow them whole killing them. The indigestible parts such as hair, feathers, bones, etc.. They are regurgitated in elliptical bowling called " egagropilas" that measure about four inches long by one diameter.

Their methods differ hunting prey. On land, with short, quick little run, or jumping from a watchtower at medium altitude where lurks. Also, skillfully taking their insect claws perched in the trees with a short and accurate flight. Usually share food leading to the cave and sometimes call the partner to share the feast. She is sometimes seen to "play" with food, passing from peak to peak until ingested or stored in the burrow.

In the days of high temperature, is located in the shade next to a tree trunk or the foliage, always near the cave. Irrigators fail to bathe, it has been observed circling rain and standing in different positions as if they were taking a real hygienic shower. Also like sunbathing, spreading its wings and leaning on the floor next to the mouth of the cave.

In our house and then watch for a long time I would say that most recognize their next human "neighbors" who share their habitat. One can approach without inconvenience to a meter away and stay there at his side without problems. Only when the uneasy stares into the eyes or to sudden movements. Different is the reaction to a strange home.

This makes the love grow and if they are not pets, coexistence and mutual respect make them a pet more, always seeking care for and preserve them with great pleasure.

Hello Hernan,
Excellent portrait of this well known owl in good sharpness, details and beautiful natural colours. A bit tiny in the frame. Have seen a lot of them in the Pantanal.

Peter

Hi Hernan. I like how you've framed it. It is one majestic owl. The DOF works over the shade really well creating a great background. It's clear with great details and colours. With this POV he looks as though he's wearing a wig. Very cute! LOL TFS Trevor
