Bromeliad - Cloud Forest
 |
|
[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Another image from the Andean Cloud Forest plants (more info in previous posts). Light conditions were quite poor so I am quite happy with the result although it is not the best...
This is a epiphytic plant from the Bromeliad family. These plants grow on anything that can support them - from tree branches to bare rock cliffs. Bromeliads are very common in the cloud forest, they have impressive flowers (you can see a dry flower in the image - I will post one blooming later) and provide a habitat for many insects and amphibians.
More info from wikipedia:
Bromeliaceae (the bromeliads) is a large family of flowering plants native to the tropical and warm temperate New World. The family includes both epiphytes, such as Spanish moss Tillandsia usneoides, and ground plants, such as the Pineapple Ananas comosus. Christopher Columbus was the first European to come into contact with the pineapple and took it back to Europe after his first voyage. Many bromeliads are able to store water in a "tank" formed by their tightly-overlapping leaf bases. However, the family is diverse enough to include the tank bromeliads, grey-leaved epiphytic Tillandsia species which gather water only from leaf structures called trichomes, and even a large number of desert-dwelling succulents.
The largest bromeliad is Puya raimondii, which reaches 3-4 m tall in vegetative growth with a flower spike 9-10 m tall, and the smallest is probably Spanish moss. |

Extraña planta multicolor, que muestra las distintas fases de la misma.
Agradable el color y la luz.
Saludos, JL.
Looks interesting. Grows on cliffs and branches? I can think of better places to grow! I like the contrast of green and red in the photo, and the frame is perfect. Well done!

Hello Shir,
I like the way you've got a large interesting Bromeliad as well as some terrific lichens in the tree behind in this shot. Nicely composed and beautiful colours.
