[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photo is taken near a farm in the Pantanal.
In Brasil live five species of Caracaras. In the Pantanal are the Chimango Caracara and the Southern Caracara very common. This is the Southern Caracara or Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus or polyborus plancus). It’s with 56 cm length and 125 cm wingspan the largest of the Caracaras. They belong to the Falconidae.

The Crested Caracara is broad-winged and long-tailed. It also has long legs and frequently walks and runs on the ground. It is very cross-shaped in flight. The adult has a black body, wings, crest and crown. The neck, rump, and conspicuous wing patches are white, and the tail is white with black barring and a broad terminal band. The breast is white, finely barred with black. The bill is thick, grey and hooked, and the cere is red. This species has bare skin around the eye that can change color in seconds. Sexes are similar, but immature birds have a brown back, buff neck and throat, and pale breast streaked with brown. The voice of this species is a low rattle.
It’s a bird of open country, which nests in a tree or on the ground, laying 2 to 4 eggs.
The Crested Caracara is omnivorous, and will eat reptiles, amphibians and other small animals as well as carrion.
The Crested Caracara is the national bird of Mexico.

Hi Peter,

A wonderful portrait of this bird. I really enjoy seeing all these exotic species that I would never see otherwise. Beautiful colors and a lovely background. Excellent details of the face and plummage.

Jane

Hi Peter,
although not a raptor this bird sure fits the profile.Your capture is good with plenty of detail which of course make it wonderful. The details in the plumage are very fine however you may of of cropped a little too close as there is a general softness to this shot.I like this one and please keep 'em coming. Bob

Hello Peter,
Fine close portrait of the Crested Caracara set in an excellent composition with fine colours and lighting. It would be nice to see the whole bird and the detail shown in this shot would allow perfect sharpness if the original showed the whole.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan
