A beautiful and elegant heron. I could only find one other posting of this species on TN.

The Capped Heron, pilherodius pileatus, is 56-58.5 cm.
Uncommon but widespread in marshes, swampy areas and along larger rivers; most numerous in the Pantanal.

Iris brown; bill and facial skin cobalt blue (more intense when breeding), sometimes tipped pale purplish; legs bluish gray. Adult has “peaked” black crown with long white head plumes (longer when breeding), white forecrown; head, neck and breast pale creamy buff (deeper when breeding). Above very pale pearly gray; belly white. Immature lacks plumes, has grayish crown streaking and no buff. No egret has a black crown nor does any show bright blue on bill and face.
In flight Black-crowned Night Heron’s chunky shape somewhat recalls Capped; both fly with shallow wingbeats.

Generally solitary. Capped Herons sometimes associate loosely as they feed on muddy or grassy shorelines where they forage mainly by standing quietly and spearing prey, less by stalking.

Wary and quick to flush, Capped Herons are usually silent, only rarely giving short croaks.

This is an amazing capture of a very beautiful Heron I've seen for the first time, Peter.
This is a professional job, truly. In the ambient light, the bird looks majestic in its natural habitat.
Thanks for sharing this gem of an image you brought for us from Brazil.

Never knew there were such herons too. Thank you for sharing. Nice lighting on the bird.

Perhaps a little lessening the Exposure and Highlights might bring out the feathers of the heron. That twig near the head may also be cloned as it is a bit of a distraction.

Hello Peter,
You brought back from your trip so many seldom shown species, like this Heron with this amazing blue coloration of the beak. Probably a first as you say it in your note. Very fine natural shot with a well chosen framing.
Thanks a lot

Hello Peter,
What a unique looking Heron displaying quite unusual features and colors. This is the first time I have ever seen this species, so thank you for presenting it to us here on TN.
Perfect white balance and excellent sharpness allows us to view it in fine detail. I love the turquoise colors in it's bill. Great eye contact and a cute little plume as a headdress. Well done!!

Hi Peter,
A beautiful bird which I've never heard before. Pose, composition, sharpness are spectacular each, but the photo is maybe a little (just slightly) overexposed? However, visually great.
Best regards, László

Hallo Peter
I have been none active the last few weeks due to various reasons but I am back and it is a pleasure to see one of your beautiful images on the gallery.

I cannot recall that I have seen this bird before. The combination of peach of its feathers, blue in its face is truly a great attraction. Add to that the black "Jewish cap" and the funky feathers on the back of its head and you have a lovely bird.

Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
