Another NEW BIRD FOR TN, the Purplish Jay.

The Purplish Jay, cyanocorax cyanomelas, is about 37 cm.
It is common in deciduous and gallery woodland and adjacent semi-open areas, mainly in and around the Pantanal. A large, relatively drab jay, mostly dull purplish mauve, blackish on head and foreneck, with violet only on the upperside of its tail. The only all-dark jay in the Pantanal.

Purplish Jays troop about in loose straggling flocks of up to 8 - 10 birds. They mainly forage in woodland and edges but also regularly come out into open areas and sometimes drop to the ground. Conspicuous and often seen, they even come in for food put out for birds at certain ecolodges and ranches.
A particularly noisy jay, giving loud raucous craa-craa-craa... calls as they perch in trees or during their rather labored flight.
