Veined White Skipper
Heliopetes arsalte LINNAEUS, 1758
subfamily - PYRGINAE

The Pyrginae, popularly known as Flats or Spreadwings, are a cosmopolitan subfamily distributed across temperate and tropical habitats throughout the world. In the Americas there are 990 species, of which about 580 are assigned to the tribe Pyrgini.
There are 14 recognised species in the genus Heliopetes. All have a white ground colour. They can be most easily distinguished from each other by examination of the underside markings.
This species occurs from Mexico to Argentina.
Heliopetes arsalte is found mainly in disturbed woodland and forest, at altitudes between 0-1500m.
In common with other Heliopetes species the adults normally bask on low foliage, holding their wings half open. Both sexes nectar at a wide range of flowers.
At night and during overcast or rainy weather they usually roost on dead flowerheads with their wings held erect.

Hello Luciano, and "Merry Christmas" to you also.
Just when you think you have seen every skipper there is, someone shows you another species. I must say your Veined White is certainly an attractive specimen. I have never viewed one with white colored wings like this, and those brown veins add such a pleasing touch.
Tac sharp focus, beautiful colors and just the right exposure. Overall a perfect shot!!
PS. Congratulations on a TN first.

Ciao Luciano

Hi Luciano,
Congratulations first of all for posting a firsttimer to TN. Secondly, congratulations for the beautiful macro shot. Awesome light management (as always from you), fantastic sharpness, great shallow depth and simple, yet powerful composition. Some background noise emerge here and there, otherwise a very pleasant image with high aesthetic value. Bravo.
Have a nice festive season, best regards, László

Ciao Luciano,
what a surprise to see a skipper coming in such unusual white colours, slightly iridescent like mother-of-pearl. A quite unusual, very nice and welcome presentation for a merry white christmas - looking like the fresh snow on the trees in front of my window today. All the best to you, too, thank you!
With best regards,
