Dryas iulia ssp

(Fabricius, 1775)


Dryas iulia (often incorrectly spelled julia),commonly called the Julia Butterfly, Julia Heliconian, The Flame, or Flambeau, is a species of brush-footed butterfly. The sole representative of its genus Dryas, it is native from Brazil to southern Texas and Florida. Over 15 subspecies have been described.

This butterfly is a fast flier and frequents clearings, paths, and margins of forests and woodlands. It feeds on the nectar of flowers, such as lantanas (Lantana) and Shepherd's-needle, and the tears of caiman, the eye of which the butterfly irritates to produce tears.

The species is popular in butterfly houses because it is long-lived and active throughout the day.

Hello Paulo,
I remember seeing this type of butterfly when I visited your beautiful country a few years ago, unfortunately I didn't get an shots. I will therefore just have to admire your wonderful capture until I get another chance someday.
I love the wing features of these long narrow winged butterflies. The bright orange colors contrast nicely with the yellow petals. The framing is quite attractive and colors vivid yet natural. The exposure is just right with no blown out areas.
