BARBADOS CHERRY - Malpighia glabra - Malpighia punicifolia L.

Also know as acerola, West Indian cherry, grosella, cerisier, cereza colorada, it’s a rustic tree, originally from Antilles, that develops well in tropical and subtropical climates, in annual medium temperatures around 25°C, but resisting around 0°C for short periods. Young trees will be killed under 1,2°C.
It’s grown in commercial scale on Brazil, Hawaii, Jamaica and Porto Rico.

All year round tiny pink-white flowers, produce red-orange to bright red juicy fruits, after three to four weeks.

This fruit is very rich in vitamin C (2000 to 4600 milligram vitamin C per 100 milligram), meaning until eighty times more than an equal amount of orange or lemon.
It is also rich in vitamin A, iron, calcium, magnesium, niacin, phoshorus, potassium, riboflavonine and thiamine.
In Suriname's traditional medicine the leaves are used against dysentery and diarrhea and is also used for liver ailments; fruit used against the common cold.

In US this plant has been said to grow in the following regions:
