The Magallanes region is home to one of the largest penguin colonies in Chile: Magdalena Island, which includes an incredible 200,000 Magellanic penguins.

This adult penguin just step out of its nest, which is hole in the ground on the left, to enjoy the sun finally shined the thick morning clouds.

The island is 35 kilometers from Punta Arenas, in the middle of the Strait of Magellan. Navigating in these waters is especially difficult as this is where the ocean currents from the Atlantic and the Pacific mix.
The way penguins swim is always surprising. They are extremely agile, swim very fast and can jump high out of the water. Unlike birds that fly, which have holes in their bones to be more lightweight, and long feathers and large wings, the penguins have denser bones, giving them greater weight and allowing them to go beneath the surface of the water more easily. They also have very thick feathers, and short and small fins that act as propellants. We must also remember that penguins spend most of their life in the sea and almost never touch land, except to raise their offspring and to tend to their plumage.

Hello Way Lim,
Excellent capture, well composed, with fantastic details and sharpness. The blue sky and the blurred other penguins on the background add deepness to the composition. Well done! Cheers,

A fine image of this penguin. Great focus, successful point of view and depth of field and nice composition.
Greetings and TFS.

Hallo Way
I missed out on a number of your recent postings and that is a pity. The Magellanic penguin is a beautiful bird which we do not have the opportunity to see as the regular birds we see daily on the gallery, thus making this image really special. The contrast of black and white feathers and the pinkish colour in the face is truly lovely and display so well against the blurred background. I very much like the rigid, almost proud pose, as if the bird is standing on attention. A great image with lots more of details to appreciate. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hi Way

This is a cheerful image with the cute little Magellanic Penguin. The composition is
very good with the bird standing on the 2/3 vertical axis, the hole in the ground at the
left, and the other holes and penguins clearly visible in scattered positions in the BG.
The details on our imposing friend is nice and sharp. The colours are very natural.
The only slight nit might be the fact that the horizon cuts through the subjects head.
I realise that you probably attempted (and succeeded) in getting a low down, eye level
POV, but I think you would not have lost much if the shot was taken 6" higher. It is
no big train smash on this occasion though. I thought I'd just remind you of that.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
