I am back home now from our Christmas trip to Chile. During the trip we drove 11,500km - and got mixed up in the Paris-Dakar rally (this year running between Buenos Aires and Santiago).

This shot was taken from a boat - and as usual - handheld.

Islotes de Puñihuil is a Chilean Natural Monument located 28 km southwest of Ancud on the Island of Chiloe. It consists of three islets off the western coast of the main Island. The monument is notable for being the only known shared breeding site for Humboldt and Magellanic penguins.

The Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) (also termed Peruvian Penguin, or Patranca) is a South American penguin, breeding in coastal Peru and Chile. Its nearest relatives are the African Penguin, the Magellanic Penguin and the Galápagos Penguin. The penguin is named after Alexander von Humboldt, a naturalist and explorer who first described the animal to the scientific community.

Humboldt Penguins are medium-sized penguins, growing to 65-70 cm (26-28 in) long and a weight of 3.6-5.9 kg (8-13 lbs).[2] They have a black head with a white border running from behind the eye, around the black ear-coverts and chin, to join on the throat. They have blackish-grey upperparts and whitish underparts, with a black breast-band extending down the flanks to the thigh. They have a fleshy-pink base to the bill. Juveniles have dark heads and no breast-band.

The current status of this penguin is vulnerable, due to a declining population caused in part by over-fishing. Historically it was the victim of guano over-exploitation. Penguins are also declining in numbers due to habitat destruction. The current population is estimated at between 3,300 and 12,000.

Hi Brother James, welcome back with this lovely capture of these pretty penguins:) Hope you had good time in Chile.
TFS and cheers,

Hi james,
Excellent capture of this small group of penguins.
I like a lot the way each of them have their heads turned in different sides, it couldn't be any better for the composition.
Great work and thanks for share.
My best regards,

Hello james, lovely shot of these cute Humbold Penguins. TFS.

Hi James,

Welcome back from your trip to Chile. I'm sure it was remarkable. I didn't need to read a name to know whose post this was! A marvelous group of Humboldt Penguins. They seem to be on alert - watching in either direction. I love the assorted poses and their colors and wonderful faces. Looking forward to seeing more.

Hola James,
Magnifica captura de éstos bonitos pinguinos, como comentabas son del mismo sitio de donde subí los patos, éstas colonias estaban mezcladas con pinguinos de magallanes, buena composición. Saludos cordiales. Ferran

I for one, have been talking with my wife about you and how long you have been missing...I think I could guess well where you were from history...but let me say you flit about taking great quality images such as this at almost whim..I wish I could do that..but an old saying "if wishes were horse beggars would ride"...so I shall hope you suffice that this is a fine image in many more ways than just quality! And of course your notes are superb, no matter how or when...

It must be a blast to be able to photograph Penguins. We definitely don't see too many pictures like that on TN - it makes a very nice addition. Anyways, I think you've done very well here. Its a nice, well composed shot. TFS.

Best Regards,

Hi James.
I hope your trip was breathtaking. Very cute shot of an attractive group of the penguins. Every of them is reproduced precisely. I do not know if the weather was cold there but I like cold silver shade of the animal colouration. Stones are reflected perfectly too and all scene gives a nice idea about that cute place. My best wishes and many new shared Chili shots.

nice herd, TFS Ori

Hallo James,

You have made a very nice photo with this group of penguins. The birds are in a very fine pose and do not look to be scared by your presence. It is the sharpness of the image that alows viewer to see good details of bird's plumage as well as of the rock birds are sitting on.

Thank you for sharing,

Ciao James,

Hi James and welcome back :)

I hope your trip went very well and you got to see all sorts of cool stuff (including the Dakar here).
As usual, we only expect the best from you after such a long trip and look forward to seeing many lovely photos from you in the near future.
This is a very nice shot of the Humboldt Penguins, a bit funny and full of character - just like the expression on their faces.
Looking at the sharpness of this photo, i think the last choice of guessing for anyone would be handheld at 300mm and at 1/400...from a beat! Splendid work, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

Hello James,
Successful capture. Some kind of family photo and you got them all. Except that one in the background;-)
