[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This shot was taken from the window of our 4x4 as we were having lunch at around 4,400meters in Lauca National Park. We had seen a number of these gulls, but none close enough to photograph. Inevitably one showed up as we started our lunch.

This is not an uncommon gull but there is very little information about it that I have been able to locate. There does not appear to be another posting on TN.

I have located information on this gull under two Latin names!

The Andean Gull (Chroicocephalus serranus) is a species of gull in the Laridae family. As is the case with many gulls, it has traditionally been placed in the genus Larus. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its natural habitats are rivers, freshwater lakes, saline marshes, and pastureland.

Andean Gull Larus serranus
Chilean name: Gaviota andina

The Andean Gull breeds on Andean lakes from northern Ecuador to northern Chile, western Bolivia and northern Argentina. They are usually at a height of 4,000 to 5,300 metres.

Outside the breeding season some birds descend to the Pacific coast.

It is a large hooded gull with a black hood and white eye crescents in breeding plumage. In non-breeding plumage the head is white with a blackish ear spot.

In flight it shows a distinctive white patch on the primaries though this is hidden when the bird is at rest.

Size: 19inches/48cm

Hi James,
another new species on TN. congratulations. it is similar to Larus ridibundus here, but it has same difference, of course. you greatly captured it with a great focus, POV/DOF and composition. white balance very nice, shadow also nice for composition. thanks for sharing it with informative notes. best wishes
Ahmet

Hello James,
A fine portrayal of an Andean Gull, a species that I don't has featured on TN before. Technical quality and lighting are up to your usual high standard and it contrasts well against the grey neutral Bg.
Congratulations and thanks1
Ivan
