Riodinidae is currently treated as a distinct family within the superfamily Papilionoidea, but in the past they were held to be the subfamily Riodininae of the Lycaenidae. Earlier, they were considered to be part of the now defunct family Erycinidae, whose species are divided between this family and the subfamily Libytheinae. Another older name for the Riodinidae is Nemeobiidae.

Several genera of Riodinidae have evolved intimate associations with ants, and their larvae are tended and defended by ant associates. This also is the case with several linages of Lycaenidae and contributed to arguments for the uniting the two families. It is now recognized that myrmecophily arose several times among Riodinidae and Lycaenidae.

hello carlos,
What a beautiful butterfly you show us! I never have seen it until now. It is true that from its shape it reminds the Lycaenidae. Amazing creature!
Thanks a lot

Hi Carlos

Great image of this species which I've never seen before. I think its English common name is Variegated Metalmark.
Good composition, sharpness and DOF.

Carlos, I've seen this butterfly for the first time and I am impressed both by its unique appeal and the way you have shot it.
The butterfly with its wings open displays its features and colours very distinctly.
Thanks for sharing this new species and best regards.

Very impressive point of view from which the open wings of this butterfly look beautiful.
The details and colours too are perfect and natural.
Well done and TFS
