American Oystercatcher
Haematopus palliatus

American Oystercatcher is a heavily built shorebird. Underparts white, and breast, head, wings and back black. A white wing patch and rump are visible in flight. Striking, long, powerful red bill, laterally flattened to help open bivalves. Eyes yellow with a red ring around them. Feet and legs flesh coloured. The call is a shrill “kle-e-ep”. Nesting takes place between october and march. The chicks leave the nest immediately on hatching.

Oystercatchers are closely tied to coastal habitats. They nest on beaches on coastal islands and feed on marine invertebrates. The large, heavy beak is used to pry open bivalve molluscs. (wikipedia)

Hi Selen

Great and interesting shot. Good pose and colours.

Wonderful capture. Perfect focus on the eye! And caught in a great moment as well! Beautiful sunlight makes this an eyecatcher!

Hi Selen,
Definitely has that soft-n-fluffy look, accentuated by the 1/50th s-speed as it ruffles its feathers a bit..The head is clear & sharp, so it works nicely IMHO.
Difficult light & subject, but you managed the exposure well :)
Well done!

Hi Selen
Nice shot of this American Oystercatcher from Ecuador :)

Ola Selen.
Nice shot.Gostei desse passaro.Ele arrepiado com penas coladas no bico.
Otima fote com bonito BG.Parabens.

Funny pose and good shot!

Hi Selene,

Really nice capture with high contrast, I love the blur dark blue background which infact helping to highlight the red beak of the bird, the movement effect of its wing I guess from gust wind blow make this picture more dynamic and alive

Hello Selen

I like the bright colours ,the orange-red eye ring and beak contrast nicely against the blues of the water. The low POV is nice and the shot is well composed.Well focused with excellent plumage detail.TFS

Hi Selen, Nicely captured and framed, love the detail & the narrow dof, looks like you caught him/her just fluffing up with the motion in the tail feathers, really nice :)
