Lava Heron (juvenile)
Butorides sundevalli

Still not 100% sure about the species... I have discussed it in my previous posting of this bird

I'd like to copy here the information that one of our members Steve Pryor (cuckooroller) has written before;

" Selen,
What can be said of this bird. It is a juvenile, and it is a sundevalli type, not a striata type for a number of reasons including the overall blackishness and in particular the evident black of the bare parts around the eyes.

What to call it? It depends on who you listen to really. There has been a past tendency to split this race from mainland striata as Lava Heron - monotypic - Butorides sundevalli. I won't go into all the aspects of why - but, some of the reasons can be seen on the proposal discussion on the SACC site. There has been a tendency in the last few years to relump it with striata as the genetic basis for splitting would not seem to support the split, and for the problems of possible hybridization with striata striata if the two races were to meet.

So, it is up to you how to name it. It is either Lava Heron (Butorides sundevalli), or you can call it Striated Heron (Butorides striata sundevalli) according to your inclination and since there is no concordance even within the experts heavily involved in the phylogenetics of S American birds."

Hi Selen

Well I have just reached for my 'Birds of the Galapagos' and it is identical to the picture of young Lava Heron! There has been so much reclassification of birds it is difficlult to say (the Shy Albatross has been spilt into 4 and 2 of them are distinguishable only by the length of their claws [but the short clawed one nests on a rock site])!

Anyway, excellent close-up with great colours and detail.

Hello Selen,
Whatever it is called, this is a fine image of what I would say is a separate species of Striated heron, the Lava heron. You caught this juvenile with excellent sharpness, colours and lighting and set it in a fine composition. This is an excllent contribution to TN.
Thanks for sharing it,
Best wishes,

Hi Selen,

I like your photo due to the nice light falling on the bird. In this good light can be seen delicate details of plumage, beck, feets. Colors look natural. Background suits with the clear image of bird.

Best regards,

Fantastic photo of this Lava Heron. Excellent sharpness, details, light, colours and pose. Very good POV and composition.

Hello Selen,
Good DOF and POV.
Further on I like those nice brownish colorsdisplayed through that specific sunlight.
Well done

Hi Selen,
I read up on the two Herons and found this: "They can be easily differentiated, however. The Lava Heron’s coloring is uniform, whereas the Striated Heron has a black crown and dappled wing feathers." See here.
This one has a black cap and dappled wings so I'dsay it's a Striated Heron.
Great shot anyhow.
The colours and very rich and golden.
Excellent clarity and sharpness.
Ths Heron has nice patterns in its plumage.
Well done Selen,

Hi Selen,
I thought I recognized this guy :)
The full sunlight here has shown the whole bird and its plummage in great detail and color. Well composed also. Thanks for showing us this species, even if the experts can't decide what to call it ;}
Well done!

Bonjour Selen
Très belle prise, excellente netteté, couleurs et lumière, très beau sujet.

Hi Selen,
Wonderful close-up shot with such fabulous details and colours on its plumage. Great lighting, exposure and DOF. Galapagos Islands are rich in fauna and you present it so very well. I discover so many species everyday here on TN. Very nicely composed and presented. Kudos.

HEllo Selen,

Good picture of this very interesting bird...

The only things is that your POV is a little too high (but sometimes we don't have control on that) and that the bird leg end too near to the frame...

Otherwise the details are splendid and the colors very natural... Having it named "lava" and photographied it amongst the "rocks" is very wise!!! :-)

Cheers and TFS!
