Western Emerald, Chlorostilbon melanorhynchus.

A medium-sized male Hummingbird pictured at rest between feeds at Alambi,a small settlement at approximately 1,500m elevation about 2 hours drive west of Quito.

The picture was taken with fill-in flash which has enabled a lot of detail to be captured. It has also resulted in a reflection from the highly irridescent chest and belly plumage. I'm trying to work out if this is an enhancement or a detriment. I'll leave you to be the judge.

Alan, You've captured some very fine detail. Your foucs is excellent.

Paul

This little bird is a truly fantastic creation of mother nature friend Alan! What a rich and vivid color graduation on it's tiny body! Simply breathtaking isn't it? Looking at my well calibrated screen however I feel that the shadows are a bit washed here! Just a personal opinion however, so I did some minor changes at the workshop! Hope that you will like it! Have a great evening and wonderful Sunday Alan!
Regards,
George Veltchev

Hello Alan,
Beautiful photo of this Western Emerald in very nice colours and good sharpness. Great composition, contrasting blurred BG and POV with eye-contact.
Regards,
Peter

A real jewel indeed Alan, the bright iridescent colours of the hummingbird and its black, staring eye compliment each other rather nicely in this fine composition. Maybe the sharpness of the nape could be improved with an f/5.6 but it is really a small matter...

Impressive bird and fantastic photo with good composition and wonderful colours.

Hi,
Very beautiful Hummingbird, a real Emerald, well captured. The flash has given the colors beautiful effect. May be you can try bouncing the flash (I have no idea which flash you used) to avoid the highlight. tfs.

Hi Alan,

A beautiful hummingbird - one we do not see in Arizona. The iridescent colors are wonderful - I love that emerald green. You captured the little bird in an excellent pose on the bare branch. Terrific background and composition.

Jane
