Actinote guatemalena ?

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Actinote guatemalena H. W. Bates, 1864.
"What is a butterfly called guatemalena doing in Ecuador?", you might well ask. In truth, I'm not quite sure. It is difficult to find much in the way of pictures and records for these Andean butterflies generally, and so far I can find no record of this species in Ecuador. But none of the known Ecuadorian Heliconiinae have this extensive white colouration, which is typical of guatemalena in Guatemala and Mexico.
This was taken at Alambi, west of Quito and at about 1,500m elevation, in secondary growth close to a river. I used macro flash, hand held in soft sunlight. The image has been cropped, resized and sharpened for TN.
Following Chandra's comments about tight cropping, I've posted the full frame image as a workshop for others to play with. Have fun, Alan |
