Sally Lightfoot Crab (Grapsus grapsus)

Grapsus grapsus is one of the most common crabs along the western coast of South America. It can also be seen along the entire coast of Central America and Mexico, and nearby islands. It is one of the many charismatic species that inhabits the Galápagos Islands, and is often seen in photos of the archipelago, sometimes sharing the seaside rocks with the marine iguanas.

G. grapsus is a typically-shaped crab, with five pairs of legs, the front two bearing small, blocky, symmetrical chelae. The other legs are broad and flat, with only the tips touching the substrate. The crab's round, flat carapace is just over 8 cm (3 inches) in length. Young G. grapsus are black or dark brown in color and camouflage well on the black lava coasts of volcanic islands. Adults are quite variable in color. Some are muted brownish-red, some mottled or spotted brown, pink, or yellow. The ones seen on photographs of tropical island fauna are often bright orange or red with stripes or spots dorsally, blue and green ventrally, and sporting red claws and pink or blue eyes.

This crab lives amongst the rocks at the often turbulent, windy shore, just above the limit of the seaspray. It feeds on algae primarily, sometimes sampling plant matter and dead animals.

Hi Selen

What i fisrt saw this photo i thought you were just about 1 meter from it and floowing closly with your camera...then i realized you shot this one with you big zoom lens and the long end of the focal length...wow!
It definitely puts things into a different perspective ;)
It's a wonderful shot, full of vibrant colors and an amazing and very attractive contrast between this lovely crab and the wet rocks around him.
The warm light from the sun does definitely enhance the image and the composition you managed here is also nice.
Good shallow DOF and spot-on focus on the body of the crab.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Selen,
well taken picture of a crap escpecially this colourful specimen from which your image provides a good look on the back. It stands out really well against the dark and wet rocks.
But in this sunlight, did you use the flash as well?

Merhaba Selene,
This crab really stands out on the image!
It's very good your close approach to bring us that amazing details of the crab's carapace.
The vivid reds, oranges and even yellows makes a joy to the see it under that good illumination.
The dark background couldn't be any better to portray this colorful crustacia.
Your note is so complete and very informative about it.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Selen.
First I have thought that I have never seen such crabs in Black Sea but then I have read the area where the shot is taken. Excellent reproduction of the animal and substrate. I like how well you have used the flash. Details, colours, reflections are great. Composition of the shot is excellent too. My bets wishes and TFS.
Alexei.

Mario

Hi Selen,
An impressive combination of colors. The best thing: the place. The Galápagos is mythical islands.
Salutacions cordials.
Ferran

Hi Selen,
It´s a beautiful fire red crab, you´ve captured well despite the intense light causing a little bit of overexposure in back. looks strange over that plutonic rock. Nice job

Very appealing image. The colors on the dark wet material are simply gorgeous. Good detail despite the reflections.
Great work, Selen! Cheers, Klaus

It is nice how you captured all the sparkles of water with this photo too Selen. Even with the bright sunlight you managed to capture good details on the body.
I guess they are too small to eat.
Have a nice week.

Great post-card image. Love the rich colors of the crab on the dark surface. Composition really works here. Love it.

Merhaba Selen Hanım,
