Another photo from my archives.
This photo is taken in the "Refugio para aves rapaces" called: "Parque Cóndor" near Otavalo in Ecuador. In this park they take care of sick and wounded birds of prey. As soon as it’s possible they release them in nature.

Latin: Pulsatrix perspicillata
English: Spectacled Owl
French: Chouette à lunettes
Dutch: Briluil/ Maskeruil

Description: Spectacled Owls are dark brown with a whitish to yellow-ocher belly, a white patch on the front of the neck and a dark brown belt across the breast. White "spectacles" around their yellow eyes give them their name.
A juvenile has the adult markings in reverse - a white head with black mask, and may take several years from hatching to attain full adult plumage.
They are usually nocturnal, but can be active on dull days.

Size: Length 43-46 cm. Weight male 453-680 g. female 680-906 g.

Voice: A series of knocking or tapping sounds with a poping effect "PUP-pup-pup-pup-po", each successive note being lower and weaker, and the rhythm quicker as the series progresses.
The Female also has a hawk-like scream "ker-WHEEER", which has been likened to a steam whistle.

Hunting & Food: Spectacled Owls eat small mammals (including mice and the occational possom or skunk), insects, many Caterpillars, bats, birds up to the size of Jays, crabs and frogs.
They use a branch to perch on and scan the surrounding area. When prey is located, they drop with a swift pounce. Insects are snached from foliage.

Breeding: Eggs are laid in the dry season, or at the start of the wet weason. Spectacled Owls nest in tree hollows and lay 1-2 eggs. Chicks leave the nest for surounding branches well before they can fly, but depend on their parents for up to a year once fledged.
Usually, only one chick will survive.

Habitat: Tropical rainforest, Woodland. They prefer to live near water.

Distribution: Mexico, Central America, Northern two-thirds of South America

Hello Peter

This is a fantastic looking owl that you have captured very nicely. The colors and POV are great. Perhaps the picture is a little too tightly cropped - so it seems to have lost a bit of resolution.

TFS and Best

Merhaba Peter,
Muhteşem bir portre bu.
Oldukça ürkütücü bir bakış atmış.
Renkler ve tüm detaylar enfes.
İyi iş çıkartmışsınız.
Elinize sağlık.

Perhaps it is the expression caught here...yes..that is what makes this image fine....it is a small image..sometimes smaller is better...of Jerry Brown used to say that anyway less is more or some such... Technically and editorially nothing wrong at all. A nice contribution.

Hello Peter,

Nice bird with a perceptible anger in the face.
It's exotic to us.
