Tiny Grasshopper on Hottentot Fig (Carpobrotus edulis)

I have been absent some days enjoying the kindnesses of a tourist city of Uruguay, called Punta del Este, considered one of the most beautiful beach in South America.

There I had opportunity to capture some images that I will go sharing with all my friends and in this occasion, I present a tiny grasshopper (in opposition of my previous post of the giant grasshopper), inside a flower of Hottentot Fig (Carpobrotus edulis), where you can view the pollen of the flower and above the insect, grains of sand stuck to the same one that you give an idea of the size of the insect (aprox. 12mm.) and whose antennas exceed several times the longitude of the body.

I also publish as Workshop another image with the entirety of the flower and the Tettigoniidae specimen.

Description: A robust, flat-growing, trailing perennial, rooting at nodes and forming dense mats. The succulent horizontal stems curve upwards at the growing point. The leaves are succulent, crowded along the stem, 60–130 x 10–12 mm, sharply 3-angled and triangular in cross-section, yellowish to grass-green, and reddish when older.

Flowers are solitary, 100–150 mm in diameter, yellow, fading to pale pink, produced mainly during late winter–spring. They open in the morning in bright sunlight, and close at night. Look into the centre of the flower and you'll see many stamens surrounding a beautiful starfish-like stigma. This species is easily distinguished from the others as it is the only one with yellow flowers.

Fruit is fleshy, indehiscent and edible, 35 mm in diameter, shaped like a spinning top, on a winged stalk, becoming yellow and fragrant when ripe. The outer wall of the fruit becomes yellowish, wrinkled and leathery with age. The seeds are embedded in the sticky, sweet, jelly-like mucilage. The fruits can be eaten fresh and they have a strong, astringent, salty, sour taste.

Uses & cultural aspects: The leaf juice is astringent and mildly antiseptic. It is mixed with water and swallowed to treat diarrhoea, dysentery and stomach cramps, and is used as a gargle to relieve laryngitis, sore throat and mouth infections. Chewing a leaf tip and swallowing the juice is enough to ease a sore throat. Leaf juice or a crushed leaf is a famous soothing cure for blue-bottle stings—being a coastal plant it is luckily often on hand in times of such emergencies.

I hope you like it J

Hi Ricardo,

A colorfull composition, thegrasshopper stands well in the middle and I like the dewdrops on the back, although I like the shot and its colors I would like to know what the result would have been if you closed down your aperture a bit more to get a better dof, well done and TFS

Yet another good catch for your grasshopper theme, Ricardo.
Nice saturated colours that highlight the fine textures on the insect's body.

Hi.
Bravo, Ricardo.
Unusual in its beauty shot. I am amazed how you have cropped and composed your picture. The leafs at foreground are very expressive and make the whole image integral. The colour palette and details are amazing as well as the bright lighting and precisely defined DOF. Blurred FG and BG are wonderful. BRAVO and once more BRAVO. Great job and TFS.

Colorida y alegre macro con excelentes detalles para tan diminuta criatura. Los "cuchillitos" como llamamos aquí a estas plantas, dan unas flores preciosas que cubren el suelo con su expléndido color. Una imagen entrañable para mí.

Hi Ricardo

This incredible little grasshopper has one great big headache of a question: "Which pollen boosted lolly-pop does it tackle first?"

It is just unbelievable what you manage to accomplish with your Canon Powershot Pro1 "without additional lens". Some folks with much more expensive, highly sophisticated, and technologically advanced macro equipment will just eat their hearts out to be able to get even half way to the results you manage to obtain. To think that this little specimen only measures ±12mm and then to see the detail in the grains of sand makes one all the more realise that this is something special.

A superb composition with the petals of the flowers encircling the little insect. The colours are well saturated and absolutely stunning, the details are razor sharp and breathtakingly explicit, the DOF is nothing short of spectacular, and the exposure was extremely well managed.

Sizzling work my friend and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Quite amazing how many different types of grasshopper there really are! You've caught a lovely one here...good detail down to the pollen and drops of water on its back.Great vibrant colours...what a clash!Nice work...take care.

Amigo Ricardo.

I really like your portfolio Ricardo here is another example of your your creative work the colours are awsome and details on the Grasshopper is awsome beautifully composed and presented tfs rgds Necip

Hello Ricardo,

The colors are particularly nice, and the insect is an attractive one too. Nice exposure and sharp focus. Personally, I don't like the framing line, but that's personal preference, but I find it distracting.

By the way, it isn't a grasshopper, looks like a Katydid of some sort, or possibly a Cricket. Grasshoppers have short antennae, Katydids and Crickets generally have antennae that are as long or longer than their body, an easy way to tell what variety you're looking at.

John
