[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note

Yesterday I presented you the largest rodent on earth... Today I show you the largest grasshopper on earth: The Violet-winged grasshopper (Tropidacris collaris)!!! Both coming from the wonderful country Venezuela!

This grasshopper (whose one leg is missing) was near 5 inches long!!! It shares the record with another tropical grasshopper called Tropidacris cristata... Imagine it flying: It is incredible seing such an insect larger than a little bird!!!

The colorful violet underwing is used to distract predator while he's flying...

I don't find a lot of info about this acrididae on Internet... If you find something interesting, please let me know :-)

Bonsoir Michel,

Hi Michel,

This picture perfect. Beautiful composition.

TFS, regards, Kiran

Hola Michel:
Gran macro, con muy buen colorido, iluminaciòn y grandes detalles. Muy buena tambi``en la nota.

I like the composition of this picture - the dynamics of the lines of composition make the picture interestng. Add on the sharpness, focus, DOP and sharpness equals a picture as what you have captured so well.

Hello Michel,
this giant grasshopper looks really peaceful and sweet in these marvellous colours of tropical splendour.
I like the soft light, and the diagonal leaves of palm trees in the foregrond and the back make an excellent composition.
Thank you! With best regards,

Hello Michel,
Awfully sorry for my late reaction to your kind words on the picture of a Skipper I posted a couple of days ago.
This is a wonderful picture of the giant grasshopper you shot in Venezuela. I am stunned to know about its size.
The picture is sharp, colorful and beautifully presented.
Best regards,

Hi Michel

Even with its one leg missing, I am sure it can still hop a whopper since the remaining leg seems quite ample for the job. On an up-scaled version this hopper would probably make Arnold Schwarzenegger rather jealous.

I like your composition with the upside-down insect snugly on the diagonal. The OOF and well isolated BG makes the subject jump (sorry for the pun) out of picture. The exposure was perfectly spot-on, the colours are well saturated, and the details are just great

Very well done MF and TFS.

Wauw, this is excellent in all ways. Superb detail and DOF. My compliments, Arjuna.

Hello Michel,
Nice image. I just browsed a bit your portfolio. Looks very promising. I will come back when there are no time issues.
