Family PIERIDAE Swainson, 1820 — WHITES and YELLOWS

This picture is for Asbed (CeltickRanger), I think that in Asbed's shots the nature is showed "as it is to the naked eye"... no alterations! Even in the pictures "in flight" as in "camouflage" and also in simple animals in natural stage, each picture is natural and eloquent.

Asbed friend, hope you like this picture, I do not have the ability to photograph birds, but I had fun doing this with butterflies! and part of the inspiration I owe to you!

About this shot:
-White and yellow butterflies + sunlight = "butterflies burned" ... so I had to deal with it!
-ISO 100, White Balance set to "Auto".
-Custom colors with -25% contrast level.
-1/1600s for most possible frozen butterflies (This the maximun shutter speed allowed by my compact whit focal aperture of f/4.5.
-2 X Optical Zoom.
-I use f/4.5 for regular DOF, and avoid lost ligth whit f/5 or minor. If I've use ISO 200, noise appear here!.

NOTE: This does not look easy with insects! I can not even imagine how is to do with birds! Heavens! :)

Yesterday was a "sunny Saturday in the middle of several days of rain" and then our "Yellows and whites" took the opportunity to go out and enjoy the sun!

Unfortunately, they all seemed to be flying from West to East without stopping, until I found this plant with nice yellow/orange flowers, where they stopped to eat a little!

It was a spectacle to see this plant covered with yellow butterflies! really a gift from God! (Thanks)

I decided to sit on a rock near of this plant in bloom and make a few pictures ded these butterflies.

I saw four different species in size and coloration. I have not got the ID's right, but I'm sure they are under the Family Pieridae (Swainson, 1820) - "White and Yellows."

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Suborder: Ditrysia
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Family: Pieridae

The Pieridae are a large family of butterflies with about 76 genera containing approximately 1,100 species, mostly from tropical Africa and Asia. Most pierid butterflies are white, yellow or orange in coloration, often with black spots. The pigments that give the distinct colouring to these butterflies are derived from waste products in the body and are a characteristic of this family.

It is believed that the name "butterfly" originated from a member of this family — the Brimstone Gonepteryx rhamni — which was called the "butter-coloured fly" by early British naturalists.

The sexes usually differ, often in the pattern or number of the black markings.

The larvae (caterpillars) of a few of these species, such as Pieris brassicae and Pieris rapae, commonly seen in gardens, feed on brassicas, and are notorious agricultural pests.

Males of many species exhibit gregarious mud-puddling behavior when they may imbibe salts from moist soils.

The Pieridae have the radial vein on the forewing with 3 or 4 branches and rarely with 5 branches. The fore legs are well developed in both sexes, unlike in the Nymphalidae, and the tarsal claws are bifid unlike in the Papilionidae.

Like the Papilionidae, Pieridae also have their pupae held at an angle by a silk girdle, but running at the first abdominal segment unlike the thoracic girdle seen in the Papilionidae.

Not an easy task to keep all three subject in focus, but you did it, and I think this is an achievement, friend Jesus! Well done!

Hi Jesus,

Wonderful picture of these three butterflies.
The shutter speed has frozen the movement well and the detail is still good.
Nice colours and a good exposure.
Great capture and TFS

Essa eu vou incluir no meu tema butterflies in flight.
Ótimo congelamento de cena.
Até a próxima.

hello Jesús

merci beaucoup beaucoup for your dedication of this
wonderful scenery of the butterflies in-flight, what i love
most from your photo is that in the same image you
obtained 2 butterfly in-flights with 2 different pose,
wings up and wings down and the middle one posed
it is a beautiful addition to the image, fine POV,
appropriate panorama framing, the foreground
superbly focused with great sharpness and details,
and a lovely warm luminosity coming to the photo

in response to your NOTE Jesús: « This does not look easy with
insects! I can not even imagine how is to do with birds! Heavens! :) »
i can tell you that for me birds in-flight it is much more
easy than butterflies in-flight, in the last week i tried
one time and i could not have the butterfly in the frame,
your art Jesús it is more hard work than my art

thank you also for your kind words Jesús, i love the photos
when it is 100% wild nature even when sometimes some of
the photos are shot on city nature parks

merci beaucoup pour cette dédicace

Hola Jesus.
Bella foto.

Hallo Jesus
A beautiful "Spring is in the air" image and a wonderful dedication to Asbed. The sight of these three yellowish butterflies are really beautiful and such a pleasure to look at, especially if one look at the different poses in which you captured each one. A really cheerful and sunny atmosphere and feeling captured here. Thanks for sharing this 3 in 1 special. Best regards.

Ciao Jesus.

Buena toma.

Un saludo Antonio

Ciao Jesus!
Grande tempismo...tre farfalle !! Splendida luce e grande armonia di colori. Perfetta la nitidezza e ottima la scelta del formato.
Complimenti e buona settimana!
Ciao! vanda

Hi Jesus,
this moment is so fascinating.
Two flying and one sitting butterfly, yellow like the flower, wow, it's just amazing.
So bright and brilliant, congratulations, this shot is so beautiful, thanks

Hello Jesus,
A very natural and vivid picture. This is a great "bonheur" to see all these Pieridae flying around, may be there is also a concurrence situation... Sitting on a stone and lookig at nature, a very pleasant option!
Kind regards
