Chameleons are such fascinating creatures. Chameleons (family Chamaeleonidae) are squamates that belong to one of the best-known lizard families. They are known for their ability to change their color, their elongated sticky tongue, and for their eyes which can be moved independently of each other. The name "chameleon" means, "Earth lion" and is derived from the Greek words "chamai" (on the ground, on the earth) and "leon" (lion).
Their eyes are the most distinctive among the reptiles. The upper and lower eyelids are joined, with only a pinhole large enough for the pupil to see through. They can rotate and focus separately to observe two different objects simultaneously. It in effect gives them a full 360-degree arc of vision around their body. When prey is located, both eyes can be focused in the same direction, giving sharp stereoscopic vision and depth perception.
They lack a vomeronasal organ. Like snakes, they don't have an outer or a middle ear and seem to be deaf; at least they cannot detect airborne sounds. But some, maybe all, can communicate via vibrations that travel through solid material like branches.
Chameleons have incredibly long tongues (sometimes longer than their own body length) which they are capable of extending out of the mouth at a rapid rate.
Some Chameleon species are able to change their body color, which has made them one of the most famous lizard families. Most chameleons don't really change color because of their background (although the surroundings play a large part), but also an expression of the physical and physiological condition of the lizard. The skin color is changed under influence of mood, light, and temperature. The skin color also plays an important part in communication and rivalry fights.

I added to the main photo an insert of the Chameleons eye’s close up, in wich you can see the movement of it, that’s why the eye is a little blurred, due to the movement.

This picture was taken through glass in the Terrarium of Parque del Este, just added contrast, sharpened and framed.

Saludos!

Hello Jose!
This time only a short comment, sorry :)
I like the composition of this photo, at first we can see the whole animal, but the additional picture with only the eye of this lizard placed in right corner is a good idea.
Note is also very informative.

Radomir

Very fascinating and remarkable! Your picture is quite excellent also. I enjoyed reading your note. Thanks!

Hola José,
what a great composition my friend, beautiful shot and great PoV, I live in a suburb surrounded by vineyards called Constantia in Cape Town and one day I found a chameleon at my backyard plants, too sad to see that he was actually dead and dry it would be a magnificent picture, those reptiles are rare to be seen in the wild I guess.

Regards,
Nelson

Hello Jose,

Hola Jose Miguel
¿no usaste flash? La iluminación y la nitidez se ven perfectos sin embargo.
Muy buena idea incluir el movimiento del ojo. La nota adjunta es muy interesante.
Un gran y fuerte abrazo.
Saludos
Maite
