Lycaena virgaureae from Fleeting Memories From Summer -06. With some hesitation I still go ahead - since we are here on TN for "Learning About Nature Through Photography" - with the upload of this picture of rather limited quality, :( , showing two "Little Flashes of Light", with the sole purpose to illustrate the difference between the male and the female Scarce Copper when sighted simultaneously with wings open, as here when seen waiting on each other, perched on leaves of Creeping Thistle, for something exciting to happen for the benefit of the species... Two fiery flashes of light will sure create fireworks! May this picture also help facilitate the intuitive recognition of the dissimilarity of the female L. virgaureae from the L. phlaeas (male/female) when seen displaying only uppersides of wings; uppersides of L. phlaeas seen in WS illustration.

For a detailed descriptions, please see the two previous postings:
Lycaena virgaureae #1 and
Lycaena virgaureae #2

Familia: Lycaenidae
Subfamilia: Lycaeninae
Tribus: Lycaenini
Genus: Lycaena, "Little [Fiery] Beam/Flash of Light"
Species: virgaureae, "From the Golden Rod"

Hello Göran,
This shot, like most of your butterfly shots, makes a fine contribution to the educational aspects of TN: this one having the extra merit of both sexes on the same picture. Furthermore, the juxtaposition of these two butterflies makes the composition the strongest feature of this shot.
Did you know, by the way, that the name 'scarce' came about because some 18th century English entomologist cheated by secretly importing some from the continent and claiming that they were very rare English specimens. The fraud was not discovered until the middle of the 19th century.
Have a good week.

Ottimo scatto bei colori.

Bonjour Goran,
Merci encore pour cette image bien construite et très utile pour les comparaisons. Chez nous les femelles sont un peu différentes, mais il s'agit probablement de la variante "montana".
Bonne journée

It is beautiful and fortunate to see male and female together so well and neatly openwinged. A perfect pose and beautiful composition.
Congratulations and TFS.
