I took this shot from a zodiac at Paulet Island. Just off the Antarctic Peninsula – the funny thing is I do not remember taking it. It is a scanned slide and has not been cropped.

Among the 17 species of penguins, Adélie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae are the best studied of all penguins. They were named from Adélie Land, where they were first scientifically described in 1840 by the French explorer Jules Dumont d’Urville, who named this portion of the Antarctic continent in honour of his wife, Adèle.

Adelie’s simple plumage ensures good camouflage against predators and prey - black back against the dark depths of the sea, and white belly against the bright sea surface above.

The sexes are alike, although the males are slightly larger than females, especially their bill. Bill length is often used to determine sex. Adélie penguins weigh between 3.8kg and 5.8kg depending on their stage in the breeding season.

A total of 2.5 millions pairs of Adélie penguins currently breed on the Antarctic continent and the small islands around it, the largest concentration being encountered in the Ross Sea region (1,000,000 pairs).

I have to say what a cute photo. It looks like a cartoon. :) Looks like it would be a difficult shot becaus the lighting is a bit difficult to deal with and you handled it with great skill. TFS.

Hi James,

I love your march of the penguins! The black and white against that blue sky is wonderful. So are the eyes.

Hermosa presentación, con esta procesión de pingüinos.
Fantásticos detalles y bellos colores.
Saludos, JL.

Hello James,
A photograph with the features of a cartoon, and the cutest of determined models, great!
Pablo -

bonjour james
tres beau bleu,jolis modeles.
juste un peu de bruit dans le bleu du ciel que j'ai supprimé dans le WS.

I am so pleased to see something different in Penguines pictures. My son was commenting if it is cartoon!! pingoo...
The illuminated Ice berg is so beautiful and looks very artistic. Great image.

Hi James

You have captured this brilliantly! I love the up hill march and the eye contact made with the Penguin at the back. Awesome blue sky. Congrats! :-)

great angle, I would crop a little the lower part. greetings, Ori

Beautiful composition, James.
You show us such rare gems of your outstanding photography from every exotic corner of the earth.
Between the blue colours of ice and sky, the penguins looks stunningly beautiful.

Nice contrasts and a good point of view.

Thanks for your note writing.

hello James
splendid composition and very nice colours
may be little lack of sharpness

This is a great shot James. It's unusual to see penguins against the sky. I love the simplicity of the shot. With that bright light there isn't really much detail in either the lights nor the darks but it is very effective. I love the eyes and the one bird looking back.

Composition, POV, colors, light and contrast is very good. There is some noise in the sky which could be easily cleaned as it can be seen from the ws. Well done and TFS James.

Même genre de graphisme que la précédente. Excellent.
Bonne journée.

Hi James,

Excellent contrasted image the penguins look beautiful against the perfect blue sky. The detail shows well in the blue and white gradiant ice. Very nice James. :)

Hello James,

Nice composition with those pinguins with the slope at 30 degree. I like the light in the snow bringing effects... One thing: there is noise on your picture... You should have passed it through a noise remover software like Neat Image...

Bye and TFS,

Hello James,
Superb composition with the tilted iceberg providing a highway for the rushing penguins. They look like the characters in the cartoon Pingu, which my son loves to watch. Are you back from Libya yet?

I love this image James. I like the way the sun is shining through the ice and the contrasting colours. The image scanned quite well. Great image of these guys marching on.
