Taken in the local schoolyard this morning on my way to the studio. I've never seen this species in this area so I decided to take some shots. The weather was cold but fine, sunny, scattered clouds and moderate wind.
After searching the net for a few hours I came to the conclusion that this bird is a fieldfare. I will post some informations about this species but if you have better knowledge of birds and think I was wrong, please correct me and I'll be happy to update the notes.

Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris)

Class: AVES
Common Name/s: FIELDFARE (E)
Species Authority: Linnaeus, 1758

Fieldfares are easily identified. They are almost as big as a Mistle Thrush but their reddish-brown backs are sandwiched between the striking cold grey colours of the head and rump. In flight the conspicuously white underwing coverts could cause confusion with Mistle Thrush, but if you can't see the grey head and rump, look for a clear contrast between the white lower belly and the black tail.

Breeds in woodland, especially birch, and in parks and gardens. Winters on farmland, entering towns in bad weather.

A rare breeding bird in Scotland, where a few pairs nest annually. A common winter visitor between October-April, mainly to farmland where huge flocks can be seen.

Very common in summer in many parts of Scandinavia, especially in parks and gardens. Also breeds in much of central Europe as far south as parts of Italy and including many areas in eastern France. Occurs widely, often in large numbers, in most of central and southern Europe in winter.

Up to a 25 pairs have been found breeding in Britain in recent years but these are widely scattered localities which are rarely occupied more than once. About a 750 000 birds are thought to winter in Britain and Ireland.
5-7.5 million breeding pairs.

Hi Eddie,

Nice work getting the subject sharp and nicely composed. The background is very soft and blurred is that just the aperture or helped in PP at all? The light is good and there is no shadow underneath revealing lots of detail.

Hi Eddie,

Incidentally I was reading your critique of Gert's photo of a bird in a VERY similar composition. This is SOME co-incidence :-).

Very beautiful shot, with a well blurred BG, sharp, vivid and well composed.

TFS, Warm regards, Kiran.

Salut Edi si imi pare bine sa te vad cu poze noi :)

Super misto "captura" asta!

Saludos. JL.

Hola Eduard,
precioso pov,
bellos detalles y nitidez excelente,
agradable captura, saludos

Hello Eduard,
I didn't see this new picture from you so far :) I like this POV and those beautiful colors. Most of all, it is an interesting post for me as I didn't know this beautiful bird. This BG, exposure, composition and framing are much appropriated. Well done! Thanks,

Nice catch light in the eye, good detail in the breast plumage, and an attractive bird, nice work.

Beautiful image, excellent colour, detail, composition and presentation.
Well photograph...

Hello Eduard,
very clear and well lighted capture of the bird we call "Drossel" in German. Excellent details and delightfully transparent colours, and I like the nice contrast of warm hues of bird and tree, and the cool hues of sky.
Excellently reduced strict composition.
A powerful and poetic image. Excellent.
Thank you! My best regards,
