Today I go back to my trekking in Bulgaria in 2003. This was my second time in this country but the very first time with my very first digital camera! Today when I look at this photo I regret all those chances for nice photos I missed just because my knowledge about digital technique was so poor - and the resulting pictures are not really satisfactory. Well, it's a human thing to learn all life :-)

Also with this shot I'm not completely satisfied. It could be done with better POV, exposure and wiser use of flash. But still, that's the only one I have of this animal. And I think it's such a beautiful species that it deserves to be shared with you!

Barbitistes serricauda
(Fabricius, 1798)
Subfamily: Faneropterinae
Family: Tettigonidae
Suborder: Ensifera
Order: Orthoptera

This beautiful and large (ca. 3.5 cm long) grasshopper belongs to a genus encompassing 8 species in Europe. Mostly in its southern part. This one occurs from Iberian Peninsula to Ukraine, reaching north as far as Slovakia. As other congeneric species it also inhabits xerothermic habitats, meadows and grasslands, especially the sunny slopes of hills and mountains.

I photographed it in the Vracanski Balkan Mountains in north-western Bulgaria, near the beautiful Ledenika Cave. It's the only cave in Bulgaria in which ice structures preserve over the warm season. Also it's a cave with one of the most beautiful cave formations: stalactites, stalagmites, stalactones and curtains. All very colourful and impressive. Definitely a place to see while being in Bulgaria.

With my friends we spent couple of days in that area, exploring not only the cave but also the surrounding mountains - also the monumental Vracanske Vrata (Vratsa Gate) - a rock passage from the Danubian Plane to the Balkan Mountains.

My goodness! I'd say that is a pretty good shot! You are going to have so much fun with your new camera. I can't get over the colors in this insect. Thanks for sharing it.

Hi Michal,
A unique and colorful looking grasshopper. Your fill flash exposure looks pretty good to me. The colors and detail look excellent here.
That is some colorful hopper.

Dear Michal,
you are fishing for compliments here, your digital camera did what you asked of her at the time very well. The DOF and sharpness of the eyes are exceprional. Personally I don't even mind about the strong shadow caused by the flash. My compliments! The species is intriguing, it comes in many colorations. Thanks for presenting the pic.

hello Michal

nice close up picture of this colourful insect,
details can be seen very clearly

It certainly is an attractive, bizarre looking grasshopper, well worth posting on TN.
Results are quite good, perhaps as you say the POV could have been better, but its still quite acceptable.

Hi again, Michal

Another splendid catch from you!
I also have hundreds of photos taken in my earlier days of the digital era that look dissapointing now...just as you said: we live and learn :)
Personally, i quite like this higher POV - lets us enjoy all those slpendid patterns and marking on its back! And what a beautiful bakc it is - so colorfull and vivid.
The details are also great and very sharp and the flash on the grasshopper looks ok now (but i'm guessing it uderwent some PP...judging after the stones around it).
Anyway, the result is a superb presentation!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Cedryk,
these colours explode against the grey rock and that's real nice. About your idea of pov: I noticed you like low pov's giving good eye contact (just as I like it also). But you loose the patterns on the back. To present the animal this pov is just allright. For a more artistic touch a low pov is nicer. Regards, Jacob

Hola Michal,
Que colores mas sorprendentes tiene!, excelente la nitidez y el encuadre, gracias por compartirla. Un saludo

I dont know why you say this is "not really satisfactory", well it might be not very artistic for some tastes, but the details are great, the DOF is excellent, and colourful pattens lovely and interesting. The POV is very descriptive too. Thanks.

Hello Michal,
I don't believe it! What is it with you and those so strange, beautiful and unusual grasshoppers? You caught some amazing species and this one is no exception. Those colors are just stunning and I must say that I don't agree with your notes as I think that this is a good capture. OK, the flash is maybe a little too apparent but as it is for details, composition, colors and POV, this is just superb!

This is a beautiful insect! Thanks,

Hello Michal,
Have no regrets. This one looks just fine to me, and I don't see what could make you unhappy about it. Sharpness, colors, exposure are all very good.
Best wishes,

Hi Michal, amazing colors for this beautiful and large grasshopper, lovely details and great sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Michal,
oh yes, that picture does deserve being shown here.
Excellent details all over, rich colours, impressively clear presentation. Cutting long antennae does happen quite often when approaching volatile grasshoppers, pressing the button in a hurry just in time before they hop off again.
I always enjoy pictures of unusual animals, plants and other objects that we do not come to see very often, no matter if those pictures are flawless or not.
And this picture is pretty good as well as it is unusual.
Thank you! With best regards,

This is a cool looking insect. A really nice macro shot Michal. The colors it produces are very vibrant. Well done. :)
