Hi again folks :)

Well, i'm back from my short trip to the mountains but i'm afraid i have not much interesting to show you from there :(
However, i felt that i had to present a nice picture for my comeback, so i went today to the thermal lake again in hope of some dragonflies and damselflies...again.

I did actually find some...and even more than i expected (i saw 5 different species) but i also found this little character, and so i decided to post him...something a bit more refreshing for my gallery :)

This is a Zebra Spider - Salticus scenicus and here you have Greg's post of the same species with some bio info on it.
I chose to link up my photo with Greg's because it's taken with pretty much the same equipment, but i think he did a better job and he deserves more credit for his effort :)
Unfortunately, using my close-up lenses can be tricky...if you use a high level one (like the +4 in this case) the DOF becomes very shallow even at f/8 which is the maximum of my camera.

By the way, i have also uploaded a Workshop picture with a very big question. Please check it out! :)

Anyway, thanks for looking and i hope you'll like it :)

Hello Horia,
An admirable macro work that presents the zebra spider in a rather cute pose. Considering the size of your sensor, f/8 should be about the limit in terms of diffraction, and it looks sufficient. There is a lot of detail around the eyes. It seems to me that there is serious color fringing, esp. red, which can perhaps be reduced in PP. It also appears like you have applied noise reduction, which has smeared parts of the spider's body. I may be wrong on both accounts, of course. In any event, a remarkable capture.
Best wishes,

Hi Horia, a marvelous shot of this "nice" spider, normaly I'm not a big fan of spiders, but this one with this eyes, that could almost be a little friend ;-)

hi Horia,
difficile prise de vue, mais le résultat n'est pas mal du tout. Sa position semble vouloir dire qu'elle attaque....attention à toi :)
good shot

Hi Horia,
You got an excellent sharpness and definition in this macro.
I like a lot the details that can be appreciated on the insect, specially on the very impressive eyes.
DOF so narrow that blurr every thing else around the spider.
I like the inclination of the surface and the composition made.
Congratulations and thanks for share it,
My best regards,

Hello Horia,
Wonderful close up on this zebra spider. Lovely composition. Great sharpness and well exposed picture. Love those big eyes and hairy body.

Hello Horia!
Very nice macro of so small creature! And you presented both sexes (in worshop there is a male - these "two black strange things" are main characters of male :>).
It is really nice to see that you photograph smaller and smaller invertebrates! Adn these are really good!
My congratulations and best regards,

PS.Both photos are welcomed on PES!!! ;>

Hi Horia

Excellent macro shot of the Spider, really nicely composed shot and I like the diagonal pose a lot, the detail is excellent with its hairy legs showing up really nicely and great catchlight in its eyes, very nice natural colours too.

TFS Hil :o)

Hello Horia,
This is one of the cutest spiders I have seen so far! I like its eyes a lot, the pose you captured and this great and original POV. Details are amazing with nice brilliance and exposure. I saw this nice picture in WS too but I'm not very aware of spider's anatomy, sorry I can't help ;) Well done!

Hello Horia,
I have seen a Zebra Spider for the first time and it is a striking capture from a bold perspective.
You have managed the macro shot very well with your equipment.
Thanks for sharing and best regards.

Hello Horia,
Nice little monster ! Shallow DOF gives a nice effect. For the hudge black things I don't know the name, I imagine it is for eating ?
The "+++" : frame, diagonal composition, subject, pose, sharpness, DOF, exposure, useful note and WS...
The "-" : nothing...
Congratulations my friend and TFS.

Hi Horia,
As always: " Well composed image as always":-)
I remember Howard has a lot of similar macro images.
I don't know what these huge black things are)-:

Hello Horia !
This is an excellent picture ! This spider looks really huge on your picture, particularly for people like me who ae afraid of spiders ! :-) Beautidul composition and DOF, natural colors, and excellent details on the 'face' of the animal. He is looking directly at you ! Very well done !

Hoi again,
maybe I am just very selective in my sightinbgs, but I have never seen a spider like this. Or maybe we don't have 'm here in the Netherlands. This Powershot camera keeps on surprising me with the great macro images, or is it just your skilled hands .....;-)
A bit shallow on the DOF but overall a nice picture.

Hello Horia

A wonderful close up of this spider. The details in the eyes is excellent.Very well composed.TFS

Hi Horia,
Nice shot, well focused, sharp.

Hi Horia,
the POV and pose are very good. The sharpness is also very good, all fine details such eyes are well seen.
The spider standout well from the BG.
Well done.

Hola Horia,
Parece que la araña es todo ojos, excelente toma y bonita composición en diagonal. Saludos
José Ramón

Hello Horia,
If you forget about the sharpness, it's a really great shot :-)
I very much like the POV and spider's pose. The framing is very good and clear BG is a big bonus. The shiny eyes are great too.
The details are preety much lost though :-) This is not a huge problem for me because the shot itself is good and the quality is more up to the camera than a photographer in this case.
Overall, good job on this one!

PS. As for the WS. I've never seen anything like that before and I have no idea what's going on with this spider. It's really interesting to see a picture like that though.

Very nice pose.
Nice eyes.
Excellent use of flash, which gave a very natural effect.
I puzzled by the shadow (right under and sharp). Is it the one from the sun or from the flash. Which flash did you use? Was it loose from the camera and handheld? Any diffuser?
The oblical pose is indeed brilliant.

Hello Horia,

Wow! You took this with an S2 IS! Now that excites me :D Really interesting capture with fantastic sharpness and detail! I love seeing all of this fellows eyes. Very well done, and thank you for the inspiration! Take care, and thank you for stopping in to see my photographs.

HI Bogdan!
Ye, what eylashes and atitude!Wonderful macro.POV,details, sharpness and composition are perfect,I love the eyes and atitude!Great work!

The things you wanted to learn more about are called mandibles.
< Jaws > At their tips are fangs that contain the poison stuff... etc.

What REALLY amazed me about arachnids is that they can have up to EIGHT EYES!!! We see four bright ones here.
Great macro, with sharpness and detail on the eyes. Other parts are not as sharp. Horia, Tfs, Jay

PS Is that where "having eyes in the back of the head" comes from?
