... aka "You work hard and then this..."

This creature is a CARPENTER ANT < I will reveal what I know about them later ... ;) > Detail: species: Vicinus ; black head, rusty red thorax (mid section) and black abdomen (tail section.) Multiple queens in parent nest.

I learned a long time ago that the best time to split logs is in the winter, when logs are frozen solid. One feels like a diamond worker who works with the "grain"...

This winter a buddy came over with a chainsaw and helped me by cutting the fatter logs. I stacked them, waiting for a good time to split the biggest ones < anything over one foot in diameter > I split a fair number of these logs and put them away after noticing that there seemed to be vains of ice in he logs.

So imagine my surprise when I turned some over after Spring < temporarily > arrived... I noticed that the ice vains were gone and that some carpenter ants were crawling out of the areas where the ice had been...
One such "vain" is the dark trench in the upper part.

PS "Rude Awakening" also refers to recent events such as the Weatherbomb, that came thru over Easter; and the removal of my photo showing its effects as well as one of the above mentioned logs. In fact the one in this photo... Enjoy, while you can...

PS I had meant to post this "sharpened ant".... It is herenow , with ID.

Hi upside-down Jaapkop
(Chuckle, in reference to your intro photo.)

This is a rather fascinating shot of this carpenter ant with its black/red/black colour scheme. The backlight resulted in an interesting profiled cast in the shadow of the ant.

The composition is fine while the notes link up well to explain the dark "trench" from whence the ant appeared. (Do I see a couple of ant eyes lurking in the dark?) I believe the notes also motivate (in part) the rather unfortunate and probably unnecessary removal of the "Weatherbomb" posting. Due to the slight coloured log, appropriately serving as BG, the ant stands out very well. The colours and the details are well defined and the exposure was well handled.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Jay. Very fine macro, showing a lot of details. Apart from the ant itself the wood has a good grain which shows up very well too. TFS. Murray.

Hi Jay,
very nice shot of the ant, looks huge from this POV and the shadow increases this even more. Colors and details are very nice. Very well composed, great story telling and the pictures suits your tale very well.

Hi Jay,
this is very close and it looks huge, almost like a white shark;-)
You captured the ant with fine details and with a nice compo.
The shadow makes it more interesting almost a bit scary.
Well done.

Hello Jay,
Good ant capture, and enhanced by the fine shadow!
It is a fine close-up, and unless this guy is bigger than usual, much bigger, your equipment works well...
A well composed and educational image!
