Better known backyard creatures:
This is presumably the Thistle dance fly (Diptera; Empididae; Empis livida; Disteltanzfliege). The 13 mm long fly entered our home, it is pictured at the window. The picture is not perfect but I decided to show it anyway because the species is not represented yet on TN.

I had a hard time determining the species. I used: J. Haupt & H. Haupt, 1998. Fliegen und Mücken. Weltbild Verlag Augsburg. It exists also in a french edition (Delachaux & Niestlé, Lausanne). Another accessible but old work is E.Stresemann, 1969. Exkursionsfauna von Deutschland, Bd. II/2. Volk &Wissen VEB Berlin.

And this is why this is a Dance fly: it has a small, spherelike head, the eyes have a slight inside nick near the antennae. There is a beaklike pearcing-sucking mouth. The legs are long, the wings folded over the back while resting. The larvae are found in humid soil, usually near water courses. There are about 100 species in our region. They are of course known for their mating behaviour: males try to seduce the females by offering a prey insect.

I did this macro free-handed with a dual macro flash and mounted dispersers. The picture had to be treated in PS for defaults (smudges, missing tarsus, lightness, sharpness).

Hi Dietrich,
this is a very good capture.
TFS Joey

Hello Dietrich,
I have seen a Thistle Dancefly for the first time and it looks gorgeous.
The image is well presented after the necessary PP work. All the features of the insect are sharp and clear.
The multiple images formed on the glass are also interesting to look at.

Hello my Friend!
Epididae this time? Perfect! I really like this fly family! So small but so danger (of course only for smaller insects!). I had possibility to collect some freshwater species in Polish moutains - Pieniny, from where during last 7 years two new species were described by my friend from my department. These are really interesting creatures :)
According to the picture I had to say a few things, I will start from these which I like :)
1.the object - very interesting and uncommon!
2.the effect - nice macro with good details.
and what I do not like is:
1.not natural BG :)
2. "to white" reflection on fly's abdomen.
Anyway, it is nice to see this interesting creature, especially that this group is so rarely photographed :)
TFS and best greetings,
Radomir

nice focus good colors very interesting reflections, why are there two reflections.

Hallo Dieter,

Peter
