The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), also known in North America as the American Eagle, is a bird of prey found in North America, most recognizable as the national bird of the United States.

The species was on the brink of extinction in the US late in the 20th century, but now has a stable population and is in the process of being removed from the U.S. federal government's list of endangered species. The Bald Eagle was officially reclassified from "Endangered" to "Threatened" on July 12, 1995 by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. On July 6, 1999, there was a proposal initiated "To Remove the Bald Eagle in the Lower 48 States From the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife." The Rule has yet to be passed.[1]

This sea-eagle gets both its common and scientific names from the distinctive appearance of the adult's head. Bald in the English name is derived from the word piebald, and refers to the white head and tail feathers and their contrast with the darker body. The scientific name is derived from Haliaeetus, New Latin for "sea eagle," (from the Ancient Greek haliaetos) and leucocephalus, Latinized Ancient Greek for "white head", from leukos ("white") and kephale ("head").

Hi Rick

Lovely composition - the BG and tree provide excellent contrast to the young eagle. Colour and DOF also excellent.

Hello Rick, what a beautiful eagle, I always wanted to see one of this in the wild, fantastic, you got so close, very lucky..have a nice day..

This is a great full frame image Rick. So how close were you? How much were you able to crop this and still maintain such good resolution? You included just enough of the tree and nice angled branch to make an interesting and strong composition. Great natural color and good saturation.

Great color and detail of this young Baldy . I've heard more than one person mistake young baldies for other species (ie hawks) , great eye . It's great to see some of your reviewers are actually getting tired of seeing these guys . We came very close to losing this beautiful bird . TFS , Kevin .
