Cheetah cub
Acinonyx jubatus

I know I might get slapped across the wrist for the purple ribbon around its neck but it’s there for a reason. The female had six cubs. To tell them apart is almost impossible at this age. You would have to guess who to give what medicine to… Who is female and male? So please bear with me on this matter. It’s a practical arrangement that is practised at the cheetah conservation project I visited.

Cheetahs have 2 to 6 cubs (8 have been recorded) in a litter. The cubs are born with their eyes shut. When the cubs are about 9 days old they can stand up; at 4 weeks they can walk. These cubs chirp like birds and drink their mother's milk until they are 6 weeks old. The cheetah mother must hunt every day while nursing her cubs.

Only when young cheetahs have learned to hunt by themselves, they leave their mother. The mother brings live food (like a rabbit or small antelope) for them to practise on. This happens when they are over one year old. The cubs have a long mane on their neck and shoulders that disappears as they get older.

Female cheetahs are solitary animals until they have cubs, while male cheetahs from the same litter live together for life. These brothers hunt together, live in the same territory and find mates together.

Some Interesting Cheetah facts:
1. The Cheetah was trained by man for hunting as long as 3000 BC.
2. Cheetahs were once raced against greyhounds.
3. The Cheetah makes facial expressions, using the bold black lines around its muzzle to signal its mood.
4. From a standstill, the cheetah can reach its top speed in about 3 seconds, and can cover almost a meter (83cm/33’’) in a single stride.
5. Cheetahs don’t need to drink water, as they get the moisture they need from the bodies of their prey.
6. Cheetahs are the only cats that, while sprinting, can turn in midair to follow their prey.

It is such an experience to be amongst these critters. The pleasure of the unexpected jump of one of them when I was photographing another can’t be conveyed in words.

I will update the technical details later on, sorry I forgot NI deletes the Exif info.

Wow, he's so cute! My gf loves this picture! This lovely cub is cross-eyed. ;) Very good picture Gerhard. Everything is great. It's just a pity that the purple ribbon is there, but you told us why, so that's cool (much like my Hoiho with the tag). TFS!

Brilliant Gerhard. You couldn't get much cuter than this.I'm nearly asleep so I won't write much. Steve.

MAJOR cuteness factor here, Gerhard! Well done! And I fully understand the ribbon where I am involved with dogs. When litters of puppies ( purebreds ) are whelped colored ribbons are also used to distinquish which puppy is which. This way accurate records of weight and growth can be kept on each puppy.

Tout simplement PARFAIT.

I think this is the cutest little cat ever presented here on TN Gerhard.

Fantastic sharpness on the face, perfect pose and pov. In such great capture it easy to live with the ribbon which this little cat deserve as a prize - if I am not wrong a purple ribbon is in the best end;-).

Can I have one? Just far too cute. Wonderful shot Gerhard, just perfect in every way.

Hello Gerhard!
I have been watching all your shots I missed lately and I must say I am impressed, not only for the quality of your work, but also by the different aspects of wildlife shown.
Maybe this is not the "wilder" nature in your gallery, but is definately ultra cute and special. Thanks.

Pers is in elke geval mooi, Hierdie is cuteness off the charts!

Cheetahs are one of my favourites. And this one is really cute. To add to the cheetah facts
1. Cheetahs were used for hunting during Mughal rule in India.
2. Cheetahs cannot retract their toe nails like other cats.
3. Apart from Africa the only other part of the Earth where you can see wild cheetahs is Iran.

Aaaaawwwww! Hi Gerhard,

What a cute Cheetah Cub!!:)

Great DOF, sharp details and good composition.

Very well done,
