European Eagle Owl, Bubo bubo, taken on a Liberty's Raptors In The Forest Photo Day last week.

The Eagle Owl was not considered to be naturally resident in England, but according to a BBC TV programme (2005), a pair have been breeding for several years in a valley in Ministry of Defence land in North Yorkshire. There is some debate as to whether these birds are escapees or whether they have arrived naturally from the continent which would only be a relatively short journey. At the time the program was made, they had reared 20 young to independence, and they had 3 young in the nest. Nothing was known of what happened to those 20 young, except that one of them electrocuted itself on power lines in Shropshire. Another bird has been sighted several times in Heaton, Bolton, Lancashire.

However, a more recent BBC TV programme (2007) reported that the Eagle Owl is becoming more common in the UK and is showing signs that it is becoming established there, mirroring the recent rapid increase in the Buzzard population with which it shares some similarities, particularly prey and habitat although Buzzards themselves also fall prey to the Eagle Owl.

As a result the Eagle Owl is now classed as a British bird and is now protected as such.

Hi Miles,
A wonderful photo where you captured a great pose of this magnificent owl. Great work on the DOF and exposure. The eyes pop out perfectly.
I really like the note, because I saw the program on TV. I was particular surprised about the owls eating Buzzards and that it is not only common in the UK but also in my country.

This is a very impressive looking bird, Miles. Isn't it great that it is now growing and multiplying in UK?
Superb image that presents the subject in a regal pose.
The penetrating look in the glowing yellow eyes is very well captured and the details on the feathers are exquisite.

What a fantastic shot of this Eagle Owl , and a great story to go with it . As with so many countries , Canada has come all to close to losing too many species . Sharing these photos is a great way to bring more awareness to these animals . TFS , Kevin .
